What is the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to improve your underwater knowledge and skills. The course helps you build confidence in navigation, fine-tune buoyancy skills and introduces you to new diving activities. You will complete a total of 5 adventure dives, Deep, Navigation, Peak Performance Buoyancy and two electives (see below).

Deep Adventure Dive: Dive beyond 18m up to a max depth of 30m, learn about how depth impacts our buoyancy, the light, how we manage our gas supply, and how we look after our buddy.

Navigation Adventure Dive: Learn tips and tricks to navigating using natural features and using a compass. There will be lots of practice to help you build your confidence.

Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive: One of the most fun dives of the course! Experiment with weights and trim, practice using breath control to adjust buoyancy, play lots of buoyancy games and probably see your instructor faceplant in the sand demonstrating her own games.

What are the elective Adventure dives?

The two elective adventure dives we do will be based on YOUR preferences. Choose 2 preferences from the following when you register.

Underwater Naturalist: An underwater scavenger hunt! Gain a deeper understanding of the weird underwater world we love and identify different types of plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates.

Search and Recovery: Retrieve lost items that have fallen overboard or over a dock. Learn swimming search patterns and using a lift bag for heavy objects.

Boat Diving: Boat diving opens up so many new dive site opportunities! Expand your boating terminology, learn about boat diving protocols, etiquette, and safety (including practice deploying your surface marker buoy), and navigating from a boat.

Drift Diving: Experience the thrill of gliding along the ocean's currents. Learn about how to plan and execute a drift dive and practice buoyancy control, navigation, communication and methods for staying close to your buddy as you drift along. This elective is tide and weather dependent.

Enriched Air Nitrox: Scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more no decompression time, especially on repetitive scuba dives. Enjoy a dive using enriched air nitrox and learn about analysing nitrox cylinders, and planning an EAN dive with consideration for the higher levels of o2 in your air. Add-On: Use this dive towards your Enriched Air Specialty Diver course and become certified to dive with nitrox whenever you want! You can bundle the Advanced Open Water and Enriched Air Specialty for an additional $160.

Night Diving: This is an option however this elective requires agreement from all participants on the course and students must provide their own underwater torch.

What prerequisites are required to join?

  • To complete the course with the UNSW UWC you must be a fully paid member for 2022.
  • An Open Water Certification from a recognised training organisation (PADI, SSI, RAID, BSAC). If you are unsure if your qualification meets this criterion reach out to Mary Anne.
  • You may be required to complete a dive medical depending on your answers to the participant medical questionnaire. This will be sent to you prior to the course commencement.
  • You must complete the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver eLearning prior to course commencement. Information on how to access this will be sent to you after you have registered.
  • There are no minimum dive requirements. In fact, this is an excellent way to fast-track your skill development if you have just completed the Open Water course.

Who is your instructor?

Hello! I am Mary Anne and for those of you who don't already know me I have been a member of the UNSW Underwater Club for almost ten years. I learnt to dive in 2010 in Indonesia and immediately became hooked, the environment, peacefulness, and adventure of SCUBA Diving has kept me sane. Diving brings me so much joy and I cannot wait to share that with you. I've dived all over the Australian East Coast and South East Asia but I have a very special place in my heart for the temperate creatures we see around southern NSW. I became a PADI Instructor in 2015 in Cairns, Queensland and have since certified hundreds of students in Cairns, Jervis Bay, Thailand, and Sydney. If you would like to get to know me a bit more before signing up for the course, just send me an email or give me a call!
