About Us

The UNSW Underwater Club is well renowned as the best way to go down on campus. We offer all you’ll need to duck off for a cheeky dive to procrastinate from study. The club organises regular weekend shore and boat dives, as well as trips away to places like Jervis Bay, South West Rocks, the Great Barrier Reef, and other well-known dives such as the Regent and the Doncaster. Check out our Events Page to see when the next dive is.

We also offer cheap gear hire of BCDs, Regs, Tanks, Wetsuits, Masks, Fins and Weights. Coupled this with a yearly membership fee that’s bound to make even the most recession conscious smile, the UNSW Underwater Club is the best option for the diving fanatic. Whether you’re a student, staff, alumni or member of the general public; you are more than welcome to join us. If you haven’t ventured below the ocean surface yet or have been out of the water for a while, we are also happy to give advice on where you can get your dive certification, as well as refresher SCUBA dives.

The Underwater Club and the Sports Association

The Underwater Club is part of Arc Sport at UNSW. Arc Sport is responsible for the provision and coordination of sporting and recreational activities at UNSW. As part of the Arc Sport, the Underwater Club is insured by and receives some financial backing from UNSW.

Dive with the Underwater Club

The club organises dive days and weekend dive holidays many times during and outside the University sessions. We also have two Great Barrier Reef holidays per year. Club SCUBA gear is available at these events for a low hire rate and most events use one or both of the club boats. This allows us to dive more easily and safely and to visit sites that are not accessible from shore. Novice divers can safely participate in most of our events while some more challenging dives are provided for those with more experience.

Hiring Club Gear

As a member of the UNSW UWC you have access to the super cheap gear hire we offer (~$10 per item for a week), and our friendly Gear Officers will be more than happy to have a chat about your requirements and how to get the best out of the club gear and your own gear. On top of SCUBA gear we also rent out wetsuits, masks and fins for those of you looking for some snorkel gear. Hire club gear here (you'll have to be a valid member for it to work). Please note that gear hire is limited to 1 set per person (excluding tanks), and if you have multiple sets booked you will be unable to collect these when you arrive at the shed. We also have a strict gear return policy for the weeks leading up to club trips, with gear required to be returned to the shed on Tuesday - the gear officers will inform you at the shed if this is going to affect your booking.

There is also a minimum $100 bond is compulsory on every order. This has to be added as a separate item on the same period as the rest of the gear. When the gear is returned in proper and clean order the bond will be returned. If the gear is not properly cleaned in fresh water after the booking, the bond will not be returned. If the gear is returned late and this has not been prearranged with the gear officers, the cost of hiring the gear out for the additional time will come out of the bond.

Party with the Underwater Club

The club organises many social events including pub-crawls, harbour cruises and an Annual Dinner party as well as our monthly Social Meetings.  Non-members are welcome to attend all club social events. These are a great way to meet other divers, tell tales of diving adventures and enjoy a few cold beverages.
