Master Mitchell Wetherell

My Hapkido journey began in 1991 under the guidance of my late brother, Master Scott Wetherell.  Having always enjoyed a range of sports growing up, I was drawn to the variety of techniques and energy Hapkido offered. Classes were always dynamic whether it be Sparring, Self Defence, Striking, Falling, Throws, Joint Locks or Takedowns. Whilst training was physically demanding, Scott always placed a strong focus on humility and respect for fellow students as had been taught to him by our founder Grand Master Matthew Kim.

In 1993 I achieved my Black Belt and by early 1994 I began instructing a small class at the Sutherland Aquatic Centre. This provided me with a whole new experience and was the start of a love of teaching Hapkido that has continued for over 25 years. Being a part of someone’s Martial Arts journey and guiding them in achieving their goals has given me much satisfaction and motivation. Whilst much of what we do has a physical aspect, seeing someone grow in confidence and develop themselves as a person is truly rewarding.

I have been fortunate enough to travel to South Korea, the birthplace of Hapkido, three times over the years to learn from several of the Korean Masters, to participate in intensive training sessions and compete at an elite level.

In 2012, I achieved my 5th Degree.

Outside of Hapkido I am a husband and father to two boys, who think Dad is a pushover.

I have made many great friends through Hapkido over the years and have been very fortunate to have a wonderful club with a depth of experience that continues to challenge me each night I come to teach.
