Coaching: Foundation
FOUNDATION COACHING
Foundation Coaching is dedicated to delivering information beneficial to the school and grassroots softball organisations.
It aims to develop coaches by giving them tools to use when coaching softball with the focus on teaching and enjoyment over winning.
There are four courses that make up the Foundational Level of Coaching, the first is a beginner course that requires no experience or pre-requisites, the next three require some additional certificates to be completed. Details are below.
COURSES
[No pre-requisites required]
Softball Batter Up Coaching Induction is the first step in the coaching pathway. If you are new to the sport, or ready to make a move to coaching, this course is where to start. The course is a great resource for new coaches but also parents of players and teachers conducting Softball Batter Up programs through Sporting Schools.
NEXT STEP...
Each of the following courses requires pre-requisites to be completed in order to obtain your Foundation Coaching certificate.
Additionally, coaches that are reaccredition or upgrading their acceditation must ensure their pre-requisites documents are valid and up to date. Vist the Reaccreditation page for more information.
Pre-requisites for Fundamental Skills, Training and Practice and Managing Games are listed here.
- Essential Skills Course
- Coaches Code of Conduct signed and submitted
Each prerequisite is checked prior to the course certificate being sent, if incorrect or out-of-date documents are uploaded onto the SBU site this will result in an incomplete course and the coach will not be issued with their accreditation. Proof of completion must be uploaded which includes course completion certificate and signed document are expected. If you have completed any of the pre-requisites already, you do not have to complete them again, but you must stay up to date and ensure each of the certificates are "current". You will be asked in the last section of each course to upload the certificates from your pre-requisite courses.
Make sure you take the time to complete and upload these documents correctly.
Softball Fundamental Skills (formerly Level 1)
The Softball Fundamental Skills course is ideal for someone who wants to learn more about specific softball skills. The course helps to develop a greater understanding of core skills that coaches need to understand in order to teach players the basics at the club or school level.
Softball Training and Practice (formerly Level 2)
Softball Training and Practice introduces how to run practice sessions to maximise the development of players. Its focus is on using the Game Sense and CHANGE IT principles to engage players as they prepare them for games.
Softball Managing Games covers everything you need to understand about coaching a softball team on game days. It covers how to prepare for games, game strategies and how to observe players during a game and feed learnings into practice plans for player development.
LAST STEP...
Finally, once you have completed all of the courses in Foundation Coaching you must pass a Foundation Competency Assessment in your state.
Competency Assessment is conducted by each state as the final step to achieving your Foundation Coaching Accreditation. Once you have completed all course requirements this face to face workshop will reinforce the practical application of coaching with a qualified facilitator.
Note: Coaches are not required to complete all four courses, and can maintain accreditation by following the re-accreditation process. Coaches currently holding completed Foundations accreditation can apply for Performance Talent courses.
