South African Kirsten Neuschäfer making waves in preparation for The Golden Globe Race 2022

The four-year wait is finally over and 2022 is the year that the Golden Globe Race will take place. Set for September this year, there are two South Africans among the 25 intrepid sailors who have entered the gruelling, 30,000-mile, non-stop, solo round-the-world race.

Kirsten Neuschäfer, who originally hails from Port Elizabeth, remains the only woman to have entered so far.

According to her January newsletter: “After working on the refit of her race boat for the majority of 2021, Kirsten left PEI [Prince Edward Island, Canada] a little over a month ago and is currently sailing Minnehaha back to South Africa – a two-month journey that Kirsten is making solo/non-stop. The time alone on the boat is giving Kirsten invaluable practice for the race along with providing her a chance to recharge for everything that 2022 will bring.” Read more...

The advent of foiling windsurf boards has extended the conditions in which windsurfers can sail and we have already seen exciting competition in the new Olympic IQ Foil Class with racing in light wind conditions that would not have been possible a few years ago. Windsurfing equipment has become more accessible and even the old Windsurfer One Design Class has been revived with a modernised design and hundreds of competitors having attended the Windsurfer Class World Championships each year... Safeguarding in practice

Safeguarding in the sport and sport for development contexts is the responsibility of institutions and organisations, who must make sure their staff, volunteers, operations, and programmes do no harm to children, youth, or vulnerable adults, or expose them to harassment, abuse, neglect, or exploitation. These institutions and organisations must ensure they have appropriate systems in place to respond to concerns.

But what is safeguarding and how does one take care of the necessary. African Union Sports Council (AUSC) have put together a Practitioners Guide taking Safeguarding Policy to Action. Which aids to assist organisation in putting the necessary in to practice. You can down the document here

The SA Sailing Safeguarding policy is also available on the website’s governance page or please Click here
