Welcome to Tackers 1 at Sandy Bay Sailing Club!

Give your child the gift of sailing. Tackers 1 is Australian Sailing's nationally recognised learn-to-sail programme, designed to introduce kids aged 8–12 to the water in a way that's safe, social, and seriously fun.

Over four days, our qualified instructors will guide your child through the fundamentals — steering, sail trim, tacking, capsize recovery, and water confidence — all delivered through games and fun, safe, hands-on sailing rather than classroom theory. By the end of the programme, keen sailors will be ready to progress to Tackers 2 and beyond.

Why Sandy Bay Sailing Club?
Set on the beautiful waters of the Derwent, and launching directly from the beach, Sandy Bay Sailing Club is the welcoming, family sailing club for young sailors (and their parents!) to build confidence on and off the water — and maybe make a friend or two along the way. Parents are invited to stick around to talk to the instructors and other SBSC Parents who have kids regularly sailing at the club.

Prices:

• SBSC Members - $320 + $22 Australian Sailing Fee (log-in to get rate)
• Non-Members - $390 + $22 Australian Sailing Fee (you will be asked to create a free Australian Sailing number at registration)

• If you sign up, and then need to cancel, you can do so by writing to admin@sandybaysailingclub.org.au.
• Refund amount: More than 14 days prior to start date = Full Refund., Less than 14 days prior to start date = 75% Refund.  
• If the Club cancels a Camp for any reason and at any time, a full refund will be given.

Course Overview
This course aims to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to get into sailing. 

Course Prerequisites

• Water confident
• 7-12 years-old

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun and learn the basics of sailing through games on and off the water.

Course Outcome

By the end of the Tackers 1 course, the participants will be able to:

• Steer with tiller extension under towing paddling power
• Tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches
• Tack (push turn)
• Gybe (pull turn)
• Reach around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing
• Sail with tiller extension
• Sail upwind and downwind by following the safety boat

You will gain your Tackers 1 completion certificate.
