Lily Barlow will be running a two day women's only marine diesel basics course. She holds a Master 5 captain's licence, as well as MED2 (Marine Engine Driver) qualification, and has worked in the maritime industry for over 12 years with over 30,000 nautical miles under her belt.

This course is designed to get even the most novice boat-owner or crew member comfortable in undertaking yearly service items on their marine diesel engine. With one day theory based and the second day practical, the course will cover:

  • How a 4-stroke marine diesel engine works, from turning the key to the exiting exhaust. What all the parts do and what they're called, as well as a detailed description of the combustion process.
  • Typical regular service items required on all marine diesel engines
  • Common problems, how to identify them, and what to do.

A practical, hands-on approach, will see students:

  • Changing the oil and oil filter in an engine
  • Removing, inspecting and replacing an impeller
  • Changing the fuel filter and bleeding the system

Working in a women's only environment fosters a supportive and "no-question-too-silly" approach for all participants. The goal of the course is to empower more women to familiarise themselves with, and service their engines.

Diesel mechanics is not only a fun skill to master, it is one of the most important safety aspects on board any vessel. Knowing how to identify issues as well as keep the engine happy will assist all sailors, boat owners or crew alike.

Comments from participants about the course:

“Lily, It was awesome. Thanks so much. It’s 11pm on a Friday night and I’ve pulled out my engine manual and making additional notes on it. I haven’t gotten so much so quickly out of a course in recent times as what I did these two days. Your expertise was like the oil we changed - it came out, and we filtered it, and sealed it up not to be forgotten. “-- Genevieve Slattery

"The Diesel course was amazing ! Lilly was such a good teacher . Interesting and concise. Not trying to turn us into a mechanics , but in 2 days I feel confident I could change the oil & fuel & oil filters, replace an impeller, and bleed the engine . Also learning many simple but helpful ideas for trouble shooting and knowing when to call your mechanic ! Brilliant !" -- Vicki Kornman
