A picture-perfect spring afternoon was the brilliant backdrop for 18 boats competing in Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s second handicap start race of the season. A patchy 10 knot ENE was a nice change after the recent strong nor’easters helping to encourage a strong field of sailors.

In the catamaran division, Tony Kuhn made the most of the conditions crossing the line on Stella in first position followed by Rob Barwick on Drift and Dave Winter on Spica.

Aiden Nosworthy won the junior division on Red Herring and was the only junior to complete the course. Bridgette Taylor who was sailing well on Dorado keep up with the main fleet until a capsize when her rudder detached and unfortunately had to withdraw when a hatch cover shattered when clambering back into the boat.

Rohan and Charley Nosworthy took the monohull division win on their MG followed by Steve Bohlsen who was sailing Intercepter single handed. Jim Kerrison and Deb Stening on Death Defying crossed next followed by Warren Sykes on Runamuck. – Both boats dipped sails into the Hastings, but the skill of the skippers had them back on course very quickly as evidenced by the high finishing positions. David Makin on Paddy finished next followed by Stuart Symons and Warwick Morrow on Elmo, Paul Robertson on Gift, Martina Holt on Spellbound, Simon Gandy on Sail Fish (also sailing single handed), Roger Shipton on Zazoo, and Terry Howard on Ratz. The tail end of the fleet saw Steve Couch on Lazybuoy and Adam Pilcher and Luke Ramm on Red Star in a close finish which surely would have been different if Red Star didn’t have to sail backwards to retrieve a loaned whisker pole that fell overboard earlier in the last lap.

Next Sunday will be Race 4 of the Spring Series starting at 2pm. Rob Barwick is rostered on duty.
