The 1st round of the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s sprint series was held on Sunday in beautiful weather with a light easterly and good run out tide. Four short races were held giving everyone good starting practise. A good start will often set the race. Catamarans and Monohulls started first followed by the Juniors sailing a shortened course.

Race 1 - 1 lap
The catamaran race was won on yardstick by Rob Barwick on Drift over Dave Winter on Spica. Spica won on handicap by 20 seconds.

The monohull fleet had a good showing of boats. On yardstick, Andrew Richards was first over the line in Impulsive followed closely by Martina Holt in Spellbound, then Roger Shipton in Zazoo, Terry Howard in Ratz, Jane Cooper in Impetuous, Simon Gandy & Jeff Smith In Voyager, Stuart Symons in Puffin, Steve Bohlsen & Ed Molony in Interceptor, Mick Hodgson in Big Blue and Baerin Houghton in Rainbow.
On handicap Impulsive maintained its win over Zazoo, Spellbound, Puffin, Ratz, Impetuous, Voyager, Interceptor, Big Blue and Rainbow.

The Junior race was won on yardstick by Caitlin Hicks & Cameron Halmi in Brittania followed by Bridgette Taylor & Isla Smith in Dorado. The results were reversed on handicap with Dorado winning over Brittania.

Race 2 – 2 laps
Catamarans – Drift won over Spica on both yardstick and handicap.
Monohulls – On yardstick, Spellbound won by less than a minute over Zazoo, then Ratz beating Impulsive by 4 seconds. Impetuous was followed in by Interceptor, Big Blue, Voyager, Puffin and Rainbow. By handicap, Interceptor won over Big Blue, Ratz, Zazoo, Spellbound, Puffin, Rainbow, Impetuous, Voyager and then Impulsive.
Juniors – Charley Nosworthy in Vitamin C won on handicap and yardstick ahead of Brittania and then Dorado.

Race 3 – 1 lap
The catamaran’s gained an extra competitor after lunch with Drift winning over Spica and Return on yardstick. On handicap, with only seconds between them, Spica won over Drift followed by Rowan Nosworthy on Return.
Monohulls – By yardstick, Spellbound won by seconds over Impulsive followed by Zazoo, Ratz, Impetuous, Voyager, Elmo, Rainbow, Interceptor and then Big Blue.
On handicap Rainbow showed great improvement to win over Voyager this time with Oliver Houghton as crew, Impetuous, Big Blue, Impulsive, Interceptor, Elmo, Ratz, Spellbound and then Zazoo.
Juniors – By yardstick Vitamin C won decisively over Brittania and then Dorado. On handicap, close finish times had Dorado winning over Vitamin C and then Brittania, now with Bridgette sailing solo.

Race 4 – 1 lap
Catamarans – Return won over Spica and Drift on both yardstick and handicap.
Monohulls – On yardstick, Zazoo won over Spellbound, Ratz, Elmo and Impulsive who were all within the same minute. Voyager, Interceptor, Big Blue, Impetuous and Rainbow followed.
On handicap, Rainbow again won over Voyager, Elmo, Interceptor, Big Blue, Ratz, Zazoo, Impulsive, Spellbound and Impetuous.
Juniors – Charlie Nosworthy on Vitamin C was the only competitor to finish.

Next weekend is Race 2 of the handicap start series beginning at 1.30 pm Andrew Richards will be on duty.
