PORT MACQUARIE SAILING CLUB

7-4-19

The Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s double header on Sunday consisted of race 8 of the summer series in the morning, a BBQ lunch, and the 6th club championship race in the afternoon. The still, glassy conditions made the morning race look doubtful, but, as per the forecast, a light North Easter started puffing in, so a course was quickly laid and the race started, albeit a little late, and right on high water. The tide started to run out during this race. The North Easter had freshened even more by the time the lunchtime BBQ had been consumed and the afternoon race was run. The sunny skies, beautiful breeze, and run out tide made for a lovely afternoons’ sailing.

Rob Barwick on Drift led the catamarans around the course to win the morning race on yardstick ahead of Dave Winter on Spica. Spica beat Drift on handicap by 8 seconds.

The monohulls morning race was won on yardstick by Paul Robertson and Will Pullin in Flembouyant ahead of Martina Holt in Spellbound, Geoff Williams in Ocean Dreaming, Simon Gandy and Tianna Sue in Voyager, Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Interceptor, and Steve Couch in Rainbow. Spellbound took the handicap win, and was followed by Flembouyant, Rainbow, Voyager, Ocean Dreaming, and Interceptor.

The junior’s morning race was led home on yardstick by Elsa Gandy and Isla Smith in Sailfish, then came Bridgit Taylor and Elle Sue in Flying Fish and Baerin, Oliver, and Drake Houghton in Jupiter. Caitlyn Hicks and Liam Halmi in Britannia failed to finish. Sailfish also won on handicap ahead of Jupiter and Flying Fish.

The 5th Club Championship race for catamarans in the afternoon was won by Tony Kuhn on Stella ahead of Drift and Spica. Drift was first on handicap, then came Spica and Stella.

Rohan and Charlie Nosworthy in Water Rat had arrived to contest the monohulls’ 5th Club Championship in the afternoon and proceeded to win on yardstick. They were followed by Flembouyant, Spellbound, Ocean Dreaming, Rainbow, and Voyager. Interceptor broke off their mast rotator and retired. Water Rat also beat Flembouyant on handicap ahead of Spellbound, Ocean Dreaming, Rainbow, and Voyager.

Sailfish again won in the junior’s afternoon race on both yardstick and handicap, and Britannia was second.

Next Sunday is race 6 of the handicap start series starting at 1.00pm, and Jeff Walsh is rostered on duty.
