PORT MACQUARIE SAILING CLUB

31-3-19

The 5th round of the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s sprint series was held on Sunday in a very flukey breeze that seemed to come from all directions with many dead patches and some unpredictable gusts, and this caused great frustration to many. The first race was in the run-out tide, with the tide finishing it’s run-out during the second race. The uninspiring, frustrating conditions led to the last 3 races not being sailed despite the sunny weather.

For the first race, the catamarans did 3 laps of the short course and Frank O’Rourke on Dino finished ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic for the yardstick win. Harpic did beat Dino on handicap though.

The monohull fleet did 2 laps of the course for the first race, and Rohan and Charlie Nosworthy in Water Rat handled the difficult conditions well to finish on yardstick well ahead of Martina Holt in Spellbound, Roger Shipton in Zasoo, Terry Howard in Ratz, Simon Gandy and Liam Halmi in Voyager, Steve Couch in Rainbow, Jane Cooper in Pineapple, Mick Hodgson in Big Blue, and Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Interceptor. David Cox in Fire Fly failed to finish. Water Rat also took the handicap win, then came Spellbound, Zasoo, Ratz, Rainbow, Voyager, Interceptor, Pineapple, and Big Blue.

The Juniors first race was one lap of the short course, and Elsa Gandy and Isla Smith in Sailfish won over Jett Hodgson in Baby Blue.

In the catamarans second race of 2 laps of the course, Dino beat Harpic on both yardstick and handicap by quite a way.

The monohulls second race was also 2 laps, and Water Rat again won on yardstick ahead of Voyager, Zasoo, Ratz, Spellbound, Pineapple, Interceptor, and Big Blue. Both Rainbow and Firefly failed to finish. Water Rat completed the clean sweep with the handicap win again, then came Voyager, Zasoo, Spellbound, Ratz, Pineapple, Interceptor, and Big Blue.

Sailfish was the only finisher in the juniors 1 lap second race after Baby Blue struggled in the conditions and just could not make the start line.

Next weekend is a double header with race 8 of the summer series starting at 11am, a BBQ lunch, and the 6th club championship starting at 1pm, the earlier start due to daylight savings ending. Kelly Miller is on duty for both races.
