The Port Macquarie Sailing Club held the first round of their sprint series on Sunday in sunny conditions with a somewhat gusty Southerly and the start of the run-out tide. Many sailors missed out on the 5 short races in the great conditions, due to being unwell or otherwise engaged on the long weekend. The Catamarans did 2 laps of the short course each race, while the monohulls did 1 lap. The story of the day was Paul Robertson on duty on the safety boat who untied and pushed out from the pontoon, only to discover the keys to the boat were still upstairs on the starter’s table. Many thanks to Dale Jordan for taking them out to the red faced and drifting Paul.
The first race for the catamaran division was won on both yardstick & handicap by Frank O’Rourke on Dino ahead of Rob Barwick on Drift.
The monohull fleet’s first race was won on yardstick by Terry Howard in Ratz ahead of Jane Cooper in Pineapple, Peter Nyberg and Jaiden Bourke in Britannia, and Sharon Carney and Stuart Symons in Jupiter. Pineapple took the win on handicap, then came Ratz, Britannia, and Jupiter.
Dino again beat Drift on yardstick in the catamaran’s second race, but Drift took the handicap win over Dino.
The monohulls second race was again won by Ratz, with Jupiter, Britannia, and Pineapple filling the minor placings. Jupiter was ahead of Ratz on handicap, then came Britannia and Pineapple.
Not realizing it was a sprint series with an earlier start, Rohan Nosworthy on Return missed the first 2 races before the lunch break but came out firing to win the third race on yardstick by a good margin over Dino and Drift. Drift again won on handicap ahead of Return and Dino.
Once again, Ratz took the yardstick win in the monohulls third race ahead of Charlie Nosworthy in Karaoke Kid, Britannia, Pineapple, and Jupiter. The handicap winner was Britannia, then came Jupiter, Pineapple, Ratz, and Karaoke Kid.
The fourth race for the catamarans saw a close tussle for the yardstick win, with Dino beating Return by 15 seconds, then came Drift. Once again, Drift again won on handicap ahead of Dino and Return.
The fourth race for the monohulls was yet again won by Ratz, followed by Britannia, Karaoke Kid, Jupiter, and Pineapple. Ratz also won on handicap, then came Britannia, Jupiter, Pineapple, and Karaoke Kid.
Dino again won the fifth race for the catamarans on yardstick ahead of Return, this time with Charlie Nosworthy as crew, then Drift. Yet again, Drift took the handicap win with Dino second and Return third.
Pineapple won the monohulls fifth race on both yardstick and handicap, Britannia was second, and Jupiter was third. Ratz had had enough and didn’t start the last race, and Charlie in Karaoke Kid left the Sabot ashore to crew with his Dad on Return.
Next Sunday is our second handicap start race with the first boats starting at 2pm. Terry Howard is rostered on duty.
