Designed to introduce young people to the joys of dinghy sailing, the program provides a safe and supportive environment where students can develop the fundamental skills they need to take to the water independently and begin their own voyages of discovery.

Kids swapped screen time for time on the water and learning a range of skills. included tying knots, rigging their boats, steering, sailing upwind and downwind, and even learning how to capsize and recover safely. A total of 7 kids aged 8 - 10 took part in the in the Learn to Sail Program, proudly sponsored by TASSAL. Another five were involved in Sabot training, developing racing techniques and on water skills.

Matt Wardell, Discover Sailing Principal at PESC, said the enthusiasm of the students had been a highlight of the program.

“It was great to see the kids engaging so enthusiastically with the instructors, and rewarding to watch them grow in confidence as they applied their newly acquired skills out on the water,” he said.

The learning doesn't stop with the school holidays. Further Green Fleet development days are scheduled through to the end of the year, giving students the opportunity to consolidate their skills, build confidence and continue their sailing journey.

And it's not just the younger generation getting involved. PESC also offers keelboat training for adults aboard the Club's competitive 24-foot J/24 keelboat, Jen Z (proudly sponsored by Franklin Marine), opening up opportunities for more people in the Far South to experience sailing.

Felicity Allison, General Manager, Australian Sailing, Tasmania noted that the Discover Sailing accreditation was an important step for the Club and the wider community.

“Affiliation with Australian sailing gives clubs the support, resources and recognition they need to build strong, sustainable sailing communities. Taking that next step and becoming a Discover Sailing Centre gives clubs the tools and confidence to welcome new people, share the joy of sailing and help more people experience life on the water. It’s about opening the doors wider, growing participation and making sure sailing is something everyone has the opportunity to enjoy.”

With new sailors taking to the water and further training opportunities on the horizon, Port Esperance Sailing Club is helping make sailing more accessible to people of all ages in Dover and the Far South.
