The 4th event in Qld OK DInghy Summer Traveller Series was held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on December the 14th.
Sorry about the late results & report. But you know - work, xmas, life etc.
2 races were held on a very packed Waterloo bay requiring the race committee to make several attempts to find a spot to set a course in amongst about 4 other fleets and race courses without clashes. The shifty, rainy conditions not making things any easier for everyone. But things got away just about on time in probably the most wind of the day and certainly the biggest rain squall.
Starting with the RQ Finn fleet, the OK's made the decision to start a minute ahead of the Finns on the 4 minute gun of the 5 minute sequence, to keep the 2 fleets clear and close up the spread of boats at the finish. Meaning some good quality clear air beats and some tactical thinking to keep clear air downwind against the Finns in full pump mode. Brett Whitbread maintained his good form and made the best of a start in torrential rain to make it around the 2 w/l laps in 1st place after a good battle with Steve Shale. Kel, Simon and Rik following not far behind.
Race 2 started with the complete loss of wind in the last minute of the start sequence and a good decision by the race committe to just let things go rather than muck around trying to reset courses etc. A rain squall halfway up the 1st beat meant a 45ish degree shift turning the race into 4 reaches in about 4 or 5 knots of breeze and placings depended on where you were on the 1st beat when the shift came through. Brett again, followed by Kel, Simon, Steve and Rik.
