2021 Youth Keelboat Program
NCYC are looking to support the development of young sailors in inshore keelboat racing through a series of training programs during Autumn/Winter. Opportunities may also available to represent the NCYC at local and intra-state youth racing events.
The initial segment of the program focuses on transition to keelboat racing for the YDS and preparation for & racing in the Interclub Challenge for the YAS.
The next segment of training opportunities will be announced in the coming month. The opportunity may also be available to train and compete in match-race training and competition.
Training will primarily be in the Club’s fleet of Elliott 6 inshore keelboats or, if numbers require, also in the Force 24 inshore keelboats.
Youth Development Squad (YDS)
6 week program – Sundays 16th May to 27th June (excluding 13th June)
Age guideline: 12-16 years old
Program Cost (incl.GST) – $200
The program would suit sailors from the OutThere Sailing, Tackers 3 and Green Fleet programs as well as transitioning dinghy sailors wishing to progress their skills and learn more about keelboat racing, including the use of spinnakers. Training will focus on developing skills to enable participants to confidently progress to racing in the Spring & Summer NCYC Youth League racing programs.
Participants may nominate to be considered for selection onto an NCYC Team for one or more of teh rounds of the Interclub Challenge regatta (see details following).
Includes boat use, coaching throughout the program, NCYC Junior Membership,
(Active Kids Voucher can be used for this program).
Interclub Challenge
The Interclub Challenge is an annual event sailed between youth teams from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS), the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) and the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC).
It is a fleet racing regatta with each club able to enter two teams of 4-5 sailors. Teams come from the respective Club’s youth performance programs and the standard of racing is strong. Racing is conducted on equally matched Elliott 7 or Elliot 6 inshore keelboats, all of which are sailed with symmetrical spinnakers.
Regatta Dates & Venues:
30th May - Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club
6th June - Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club
20th June - Cruising Yacht Club of Australia
27th June - Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron
Travel to and from the regatta venues is the participants responsibility and cost however NCYC will assist to coordinate car-pooling if possible. The NCYC will support the teams at all events with a Club Coach.
