As a volunteer-run club, all yachts racing at Manly Yacht Club are required to complete at least two Race Committee duties throughout the season. Attendance at this session is essential for anyone intending to fulfil the role of Race Officer or Support Boat Driver. It ensures consistency in race management and the safe, effective operation of club equipment.

Morning Theory Session (in the Hall, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM)

The theory session will cover:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the Race Officer

  • Race Day Preparation: Setting up course documentation, reviewing the weather forecast, briefing crew

  • Start/Finish Line Procedures: Flag sequences, sound signals, timekeeping

  • Handling On-Water Issues: Postponements, recalls, protests, and abandonment procedures

  • Communication: Using VHF, shore liaison, and managing competitors

  • Risk Management and Incident Reporting

  • Support Boat Briefing: Responsibilities and safety requirements for support boat crew

All participants will receive printed reference materials, checklists, and a race officer’s guide specific to MYC operations.

Free BBQ Lunch (12:00 PM–1:00 PM)

To thank all volunteers for their involvement, a complimentary BBQ lunch will be served on the deck from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. This also provides an opportunity to ask informal questions and meet fellow volunteers.

Afternoon Practical Session (On-Water, 1:00 PM onwards)

The practical component includes hands-on training aboard MYC’s race management and support vessels:

  • Ready Get Set (RO Start Boat):

    • Engine checks and start-up

    • Flag pole and horn operations

    • Anchor deployment and retrieval
