Club Update - June/July 2021

Published Tue 29 Jun 2021

Good afternoon members,

As we write this update, we asked ourselves will anything that discussed still apply next week, tomorrow, or even this afternoon? The life of lockdowns and restrictions is one that we are becoming all too familiar with, however our response to such lockdowns and challenges is where our resilience shines. and challenges that show our true value.

We had generated some great momentum in the lead-up, and across the first few rounds of the Winter Competition, with some great successes from all our teams. We welcomed many new members to the club, and old members back from years gone by. We moved into a new training venue and time at MSAC, and added new swimming sessions at the Uni Pool.

And then COVID came back and of course another lockdown…..we missed 3 rounds of competition, and now there are 2 weeks of school holidays. But not all is lost, we are now keenly awaiting the return to the pool - which starts tonight!

Club training will return this week in a modified form for the school holidays.

  • Women’s teams only will train tonight (29-Jun) from 7:30-9pm at MSAC

  • Men’s teams only will train next Tuesday (6-Jul) from 7:30-9pm at MSAC

  • All members welcome to Melb Uni Pool Wednesday nights 7:45-9pm for swimming (returning as per prior to COVIDl)

It is intended that we will return back to our Sunday timeslot from the 11th of July.

WPV Winter Competition is set to resume Tuesday 13 July, Wednesday 14 July and Thursday 15 July.

An update was provided on the WPV website yesterday. This was the original scheduled return after the school holidays. All our teams should have a fixture that week, and fixtures for the remainder of the season should be released by the end of this week. All members have paid their WPV/WPA registration fees, however due to the uncertainty, match fees (originally due to be invoices at Round 4) have not been charged as yet. These will be revised accordingly when the final number of games is confirmed by WPV and invoices sent out when competition recommences.

University Nationals selection trial dates will be announced shortly.

The Uni Nationals is an annual tournament, and will be held on the Gold Coast this year, encompassing different universities and sports from across the country. The University of Melbourne intends to send both a women’s and men’s water polo team to the University Nationals in September and the club will be managing trials and selections of the team in the next few weeks. For more information about the event please see the University Nationals website, MUSport information and speak to your managers/coaches.

Upcoming Club Social Events

It has been a while between drinks, and we have a couple of events in the pipeline to get our members back together, celebrate the club and the sport. Please save the dates and keep your eyes peeled for updates in the next couple of weeks.

  • Date TBC - Olympic Water Polo Screening

We look for to seeing you all back around the pool in the next couple of weeks, and when competition resumes.

Stay safe!
