3 Sunday sessions to introduce your 8-10 year old to sailing before deciding to join the MYC junior sailing program.

Thank you for your interest in sailing as a sport for your child. At MYC, we acknowledge that sailing is a complex sport and will not be suited to everyone, hence our Junior and Youth Sailing Program offers 10 children (aged 8-10) a chance to try the sport of sailing for three Sundays, using the Club’s Optimist training dinghies and life-jackets.  Our TrySail course is about families having time to decide whether sailing is suitable for your child and to get an appreciation of the sport and how MYC operates. Our placements are limited in order to provide a high level of support for all of our sailors.

Sailing is a challenging and rewarding sport. Wind and water are constantly changing as your young sailor adapts tactics, strategy, rules, independence, resilience, self-confidence and teamwork. MYC coaches are amongst the very best and will help your young sailor acquire a level of knowledge and experience from which sailors begin to enjoy challenges and become passionate about them.  Sailing is physically and mentally demanding, and sailing a boat well in a competitive environment takes many years.  With each of these aspects comes many valuable experiences for life.

Having completed your TrySail course, your child may be interested in our Learn to Sail course. To continue to this level, annual Junior and Youth Sailing Program fees will be due, consisting of an MYC membership and annual coaching fee, including continued use of a dinghy and life jacket during the Learn to Sail course.

There is no time limit to Learn to Sail, but once your child has a basic level of competence, they will graduate to our Transition class. Graduation to this level is about building confidence and by the end of the Transition level, there is a commitment to acquire their own Optimist dinghy. Optimist sailors go on to Learn to Race and Learn To Compete which will require a commitment to train during the week and race. The curriculum pathway from junior sailing extends to youth and olympic classes.

Our program is seeking support from families wishing to support their child in a longstanding relationship with sailing. Our schedule requires us to limit intake and focus on quality. Our fees, including membership and training, are set to deliver exceptional value. Our community support base not only help us to keep costs down, but also to build and improve an active club environment. Families members will be encouraged to get involved with supporting their children and other club activities.
