Tenpin Superleague: Joe Stern Memorial Tournament

Published Fri 20 May 2022

Last Wednesday 11th May, Maccabi Tenpin Super League held its annual Joe Stern Memorial Mid-Year Tournament in memory of one of our bowlers who passed away eight years ago and was our President Sue Sznajer’s partner in crime for many years.

This year we had 4 ladies and 5 men competing, bowling four games. The 4 ladies competing were: Naomi Baram; Deidre Libbert; Fiona and Michelle Rothman who unfortunately pulled out at the last minute. The 5 men competing were:  Andrew Drylie; Howard Baram; Michael Eisenstein; Zac Judd and Ari Baram who also pulled out. Last years winner Anthony Houston did not contest his title and Susan Sznajer was out with an injury.

In the lady’s division after the first two games bowled Naomi was in the lead with a 447 w/hcp for which her second game she bowled a 200 scratch and Deidre next on a 343 w/hcp.

In the first block of two games in the men’s division Andrew was in the lead with a 426 w/hcp; not far behind was Zac with a 400 w/hcp followed by Howard with a 1 point different on 399 w/hcp and Michael on 387 w/hcp. Howard had the best scratch score in the men’s division with a 202 having 7 strikes, 4 spares and only one open frame.

In the second block of two games in the lady’s division Naomi held her lead with 410 w/hcp with Deidre finishing on a 387 w/hcp.

In the men’s division after the second block of two games the new leader was Michael on 435 w/hcp followed by Zac on 397 w/hcp with Andrew dropped to third place on 369 w/hcp and then Howard on 348 w/hcp. The best high score in the men’s division went to Michael with a 187 scratch.

After the four games bowled the scores were tally and third place was declared. In the lady’s division as there were only two ladies bowling, no play off played. In the men’s division Andrew was declared in 3rd place.

The final standing in the lady’s division w/hcp was Naomi on 857 w/hcp which beat the men’s high score and Deidre on 730 w/hcp. This is Naomi second win, as she won for the first time in 2019.

In the men’s division Michael came in first on 822 w/hcp followed by Zac on 797 w/hcp; Andrew on 795 w/hcp then Howard on 747 w/hcp.

In the men’s one game playoff between Michael and Zac there were only 3 handicap points different between them. Michael opened the first three frames with strikes for which Zac was unable to match it. Michael then bowled the next three frames with 2 spares and a strike followed by the next three frame with all spares and then in the 10th frame bowled a spare and strike giving him a 209 scratch with 260 w/hcp. This was too good for Zac for which he could only managed a 144 w/hcp. Footnote: Zac is Sue’s grandson.

This is Michael first win in this tournament. Well done to all the bowlers who bowled in this year’s tournament, and we hope that next year will have more club members bowling.

The winners are: Naomi Baram and Michael Eisenstein
