Senior Soccer: older team's victory in Maccabi v Maccabi match

Published Mon 24 Aug 2020

After drawing the 2 previous games against the younger Maccabi side, Maccabi AA2A were looking to retain their 3rd place position on the ladder against the Maccabi AA2B opposition, who were looking to prove they could contest against an older and more experienced Maccabi opposition. With the cold wind howling aggressively in favour of AA2A, it didn’t take long for AA2A captain Dan Engelman’s corner to curl into the back of the net for 1-0. Within the next 20 minutes, Dan got himself a goal picking up the scraps off a Mark Filler free kick, who then also got himself on the scoresheet with a bullet strike before the half to make it 3-0.

The AA2B team may of appeared down and out, but with the wind blowing in favour for Lachie Malek’s side for the 2nd half, they seemed to find some rhythm and pile on the pressure, hitting the crossbar twice off a Zac Rapsford chip and Matt Sharp header and finally scoring a goal through Zac Wein to reduce the scoreline difference to 3-1. It was ultimately the experience that won out, with the AA2A keeping a strong defensive line against the wind and pressure with Centre-Backs Greg Ellerine and Adam Sesel leading the back line. The game finished at 4-1, with a neat cross from Giora Glick to a composed Jonathan Solomon to guarantee the 3 points.

Both teams really showcased a performance in tough playing conditions. The AA2A look to close in on second place now after today’s win, while the AA2B sit just outside of the top 4 with 6 games left to play. In other Senior Club matches the AA1 Saturday side had another 2-2 draw this time with arch rivals Queens Park in what was a fiery clash. Goals scored by Steve Filler and a last minute equalizer for Jason Simoes. Our Sunday Division 1 side had a 3 - 1 loss to Coogee after a couple of good wins. Dylan Jacobsen scoring the lone goal and our $5's are still undefeated winning 2-0 over Dunbar with goals to Yossi Stern and David Hirst.
