Rugby: Great to be Back in the Winners Circle!

Published Wed 19 Aug 2020

Maccabi Rugby reclaimed the Barbara Streisand Cup two weeks ago with solid wins over Sydney Convicts in both first and second grade.

In second grade, the sides traded intercept tries in the opening stanza before fine work from the Maccabi pack saw veteran prop Harris Lloyd-Levy crash over for his first try for the club at the grand old age of 41. Aaron Muller added a third with a trademark pick and go close to the line before a late consolation to Convicts left the final score at 19-10. The match was also notable for the debut of 17 year old Elijah Grynberg, who took a break from studying for his HSC trials to put in a solid shift at halfback.

Both sides came out firing in first grade, with Convicts scoring three early tries before Daniel Soroka finished a fine team move for the blues. A quick thinking tap penalty from Miles Warriner, making his long-awaited return from injury, cut the gap further before Jared Ellison crashed over after good build up play from Matt Waugh. In a tense second half, the sides traded penalties before Ben Quittner grounded the ball after a fine rolling maul to put Maccabi in the lead for the first time in the game. A final penalty from Chad Bobrow, who finished the game with 12 points from the boot, put Maccabi outside scoring range for the game to finish 32-24 in Maccabi’s favour.

Senior player Shaun Jankelowitz was rapt about the club’s performance after the game. “It was great to get back in the winner’s circle after a difficult few weeks, and even better given that it came through the youth in our club. Four of today’s first grade starters were under the age of 20, with another one off the bench – it bodes really well for the future of the club.”

The win sees Maccabi sitting within striking distance of finals berths in both grades with just two rounds left after this week’s wet weather weekend.
