Event information
This is an introductory sailing course catering for complete beginners in the 8-12 age bracket. The emphasis in this course is on learning by having fun. It is conducted in our “Optimist” (or Opti) class dinghies, which are used Australia-wide as the preferred kids’ learn-to-sail boat. Participants will be in pairs in each boat. Safety is priority: all participants will wear life jackets (provided by the club); we generally stay within Lindisfarne Bay where there are minimal waves, winds are lighter and the conditions are suited to beginners; and instructors are on the water in small inflatable motorboats to provide instruction and assistance when needed. Kids up to age 14 could participate in this course, but the Opti dinghies may be a little squeezy for teenage kids.
No sailing or boating experience required. Participants must be able to swim and be confident in the water.
What to bring:
- Wetsuit (either long or short sleeved) is highly recommended – it is usual (and fun...) to fall in!
- If not wearing a wetsuit, bring clothes suitable for getting wet, e.g. bathers with shorts and suitable top or rash vest as well.
- Towel.
- Change of clothes for afterwards.
We are holding an information session to provide an more information about the course, allow participants to see the sailboats, and provide an opportunity to ask questions on Thursday 7th October at 7pm. If you are uncertain about enrolling in this course, you are welcome to attend the information session first.
