KSYC Named SA Sailing Club of the Year for Second Consecutive Year

King Shaka Yacht Club (KSYC) has officially been awarded the SA Sailing Club of the Year for the second year in a row. The was announced at the South African Sailing AGM on 27 August 2026.

The award has recognised KSYC’s exceptional efforts in advancing transformation, youth engagement, and competitive achievement in sailing during the 2025 calendar year. 

Not only did the club expand its membership from 18 to 105 members at a time when other clubs are struggling with their membership growth, but it achieved this while at the same time realising a membership profile of 78% Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDI), 64% female representation and 63% youth engagement. 

On the water, KSYC fielded three teams at the 2025 Mirror World Championships in Durban, secured victory at the ILCA Nationals, placed 1st and 3rd at the L26 Nationals during MSC Week 2025 and secured podium finishes across multiple provinces. 

The year’s success continued with the TuziTekwini Ocean Race 2025 becoming the east coast’s largest ocean-racing event and received national broadcast coverage and backing from the KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. For the year ahead, KSYC will be continuing their youth sailing initiatives as well as the introduction of e-sailing programmes. 

Speaking after the award was announced, KSYC Commodore Keelan Govender said, “Securing the Club of the Year award for two consecutive years validates our ongoing mission to make sailing accessible and representative for all South Africans. Our growth in youth and female membership, combined with our competitive results and community initiatives, demonstrates that transformation and excellence go hand-in-hand.”
