SUMMARY INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Green Fleet is a development initiative to encourage sailors who have completed Tackers 3, Start Sailing 1 & 2 or Out There Sailing equivalent, to continue and begin learning how to race. The training is focussed on developing sailors' ability to start a race, sail the course and finish. Through training and racing with Green Fleet, and as a part of the Club Racing program, students will move through higher-level squads to prepare for State and National level competition.
REGISTRATION OPTIONS
Greenfleet FULL WEEK: 5x sessions
- Monday 18th January 2027
- Tuesday 19th January 2027
- Wednesday 20th January 2027
- Thursday 21st January 2027
- Friday 22nd January 2027
- We will endeavour to get out on the water each day, but if weather is unkind we will do land based learning or ask to adjust the time of certain days.
PREREQUISITES
To qualify to join Green Fleet sailors require the following:
- Tackers 3 Completion Certificate, or Start Sailing 1 & 2 Certificate or equivalent experience (must be approved by Hillarys Yacht Club Senior Coach or Training coordinator)
- A Boat – Either your own dinghy or you can utilise a club dinghy for a daily fee (this will be the same if your child chooses to join the division)
- This will be open to general public, but if you choose to transition into the Dinghy (racing) division, you will need current financial Junior/Adult Membership
DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE GREEN FLEET PROGRAM
Following the structure and instruction in learn-to-sail programs. Green Fleet is an introduction to coaching and learning to train.
Green Fleet promotes practicing the fundamental skills of sailing, introduces some foundation race skills through training activities in an environment that is enjoyable, without a competition focus.
The key elements of the of the GreenFleet program include:
- Basic boat handling
- Skills to go fast
- Racing skills and knowledge rules of the road on the water
- Equipment and discipline
- Sailing environment and Safety
- Club development of sportsmanship, values, and common goals
Please bring:
- your sailing gear.
- drink bottle and snack
- a towel and change of clothes, and
- a $10 rental fee is required for use of a club Dinghy each day, this can be paid in full ($50) as part of your registration or in cash on day one of the course.
At the end of the program, the coach will provide feedback as to which sailors are ready to advance to the Dinghy section and which sailors may need to complete further training. This is supported by detailed assessment guidelines provided by Australia Sailing.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Other import aspects include parent involvement in:
- Rigging and derigging the Dinghies.
- Launching and recovery of the Dinghies
- Parents may come out on the water to assist with setting marks, flag operations, towing and safety.
- Please advise if you are volunteering, as I will need to get you registered, this will ensure you are covered by Insurance. (Free registration)
We understand that this Green Fleet is run during the work week, so if parents are unable to join and assist that is ok!
