Course information

This course is sold out.

This Course is weather dependant and may need to be rescheduled by the club, some flexibility in availability may be required.

Are you a woman who crews a keelboat regularly and want to learn to helm?  Perhaps you skipper a dinghy on the weekend in club races around Hobsons Bay and want to get into keel boating?

Thanks to the Sail Our Way – Women in Sailing Grant Program, Hobsons Bay Yacht Club is offering four women a scholarship to a women’s Start Helming program to be run at the club in late May.  The two women trainers are experienced sailors who will introduce capable crew to the initial knowledge and skills of helming.

This scholarship is a continuation of Hobsons Bay Yacht Club's encouragement of women to be active members of the sailing fleet.  Shirley Freeman, the first woman Pilots Trophy and in many Hobsons Bay Yacht Club races.  Currently some 50 women sail from the club in afternoon and weekend races and on more leisurely cruises around Port Phillip.

Through this scholarship the successful trainees will be matched with club mentors sailing in the winter season who can provide racing experiences to further develop the trainees' keelboat skills in preparation to helm in the Female Helm Twilight Series summer races.

The scholarship is open to women (18+) currently sailing on a regular basis, preference being given to Hobsons Bay Yacht Club members and members of local dinghy class sailing clubs.

If you are interested, the club warmly supports your application.
