The Medical Support Personnel (MSP) play a critical role in supporting the health, safety, and performance of players, umpires, and officials across Hockey Australia Masters events. MSPs are responsible for injury prevention, acute care, recovery optimisation, and rehabilitation, ensuring participants can perform at their best throughout competition.
This role is both clinical and collaborative, requiring therapists to work closely with event organisers, medical staff, and team management while maintaining professionalism and compliance with Hockey Australia policies.
Key Responsibilities
Injury Prevention & Management
· Deliver pre-game warm-up, mobility, and injury-prevention programs.
· Apply taping and strapping (rigid and kinesiology) for injury support.
· Provide on-field acute injury management (DRABCD, CPR, concussion protocols, fractures, soft tissue).
· Assess and treat musculoskeletal injuries; design appropriate rehabilitation plans.
Treatment & Recovery
· Provide manual therapy (massage, soft tissue, joint mobilisation, dry needling, cupping, IASTM, trigger point therapy – within scope of practice).
· Guide recovery strategies including compression, stretching, relaxation, and load management.
· Offer pre- and post-game treatments to enhance performance and recovery.
Event & Operational Duties
· Work collaboratively within the other MSP to ensure consistent service delivery.
· Operate from designated medical/therapy zones, ensuring safe, confidential, and professional service.
· Maintain accurate records of treatments and injuries in line with privacy and reporting requirements.
· Support Hockey Australia Masters and World Masters Hockey’ compliance with concussion management, integrity framework, and codes of conduct.
Essential Criteria
· Recognised qualification in one of the following (or equivalent):
o Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Osteopathy, Myotherapy, Sports & Exercise Science, Diploma of Remedial Massage, Level 3 Sports Trainer (SMA).
· Current registration with a relevant professional body.
· Current First Aid & CPR certification.
· Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance.
· Minimum 1 year of hands-on clinical or sports therapy experience.
· Ability to provide treatment equipment (massage table, consumables).
Desirable Criteria
· Previous experience supporting athletes at national or international sporting events.
· Knowledge of field hockey injuries and recovery demands.
· Advanced modalities (dry needling, cupping, acupuncture, Strength & Conditioning, HVLA).
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure in a team environment.
Required Attributes
· Clinical Expertise: Proficient in musculoskeletal and injury assessment, clinical decision-making, and a wide range of manual therapy and rehabilitation techniques.
· Adaptability: Able to work effectively in dynamic, fast-paced sporting environments and adjust to changing demands.
· Collaboration & Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work seamlessly within a multidisciplinary team and communicate clearly with players, staff, and management.
· Organisation: Demonstrates strong time-management and organisational skills to balance multiple priorities.
· Professional Conduct: Maintains confidentiality, integrity, and ethical standards in line with Hockey Australia Masters and World Masters Codes of Conduct.
Hours of Work & Availability Medical Support Personnel are expected to be available for all tournament dates, including training days. On average, a minimum of four (4) hours per day is required. Work times will be arranged in consultation with the coach and team manager.
· On non-game days, hours will be set based on team needs and may include recovery sessions or injury management.
· MSPs are not expected to work excessively long days, but must ensure that all injured players are assessed and adequately supported.
· Scheduling will balance player care with appropriate downtime for MSPs to maintain consistent performance throughout the tournament.
Personal activities must not interfere with team medical requirements.
Uniform Requirements A new official event uniform will be issued for the tournament. Previous uniforms are not permitted to be worn under any circumstances.
· MSPs are required to purchase the official event uniform prior to the tournament.
· The uniform must be worn at all games, recovery sessions, and official team activities to ensure a professional and consistent appearance.
· Appropriate footwear and presentation standards must be maintained at all times.
· During travel or personal downtime, additional personal clothing may be worn, but the official uniform must always be worn when representing Hockey Australia Masters in any official capacity.
Honorarium
Honorarium (amount TBC): Paid approximately one month prior to the tournament, intended to offset some travel, uniform, and accommodation costs. Intended to offset some of your travel, uniform, and accommodation costs.
Code of Conduct & Compliance
MSPs must adhere to all Hockey Australia Masters and Hockey Australia policies, including:
· National Integrity Framework (member protection, anti-doping, competition integrity).
· Concussion Policy.
· Officials’ and Participants’ Codes of Conduct.
· Event and venue safety requirements.
· Medical Confidentiality form
Professional conduct, confidentiality, and safeguarding standards must be always upheld. Breaches may result in removal from the event (at your personal cost) and ineligibility for future HAM participation.
Travel & Accommodation
MSPs are responsible for arranging their own travel. Accommodation will be organised with the team unless otherwise advised, and may involve sharing with other MSPs, players, or staff. Flexibility is required to align with team logistics and schedules. Any additional costs arising from personal travel or accommodation preferences will be the responsibility of the MSP.
Insurance & Documentation
All MSPs must provide evidence in their application of:
· Current professional registration (e.g., AHPRA, ESSA, SMA, or relevant body).
· Professional Indemnity Insurance.
· Public Liability Insurance.
· Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
· Proof of identity (e.g., driver’s licence, passport).
