2021 Presentation Awards

Published Wed 29 Sep 2021

Firstly, I would like to thank our coaches, Callum, Sam and Kelli on doing a wonderful job in what proved to be a very difficult season. Thank you to all the team managers and volunteers who assisted in looking after the teams each week.

To all of the players, Thank you so much for your understanding and dedication this season. Sorry we couldnt play out the final series to finish off a great season. This year, I am proud to say that all four of our season teams finished in the top 2 of their division, with the Division 2 Men and Division 2 Saints Red womens teams ending the season as premiers, while our Division 1 Men and Division 2 Saints Black women teams finishing runners up. What a fantastic result for the club and a credit to all those involved. We hope to see all our players return for a stronger year next year.

I would like to say a big thank you to the 2021 committee. What a year it has been. It was great to see some new faces and lots of new ideas. Unfortunately, many of these new ideas were unable to be implemented this year, but we hope to follow through with them next year.

We are so disappointed that we could not have our presesntation night this year as planned, but we are planning a season launch for 2022 , where we will also present this years award winners with their trophies. Keep an eye out for more information soon.

Onto the presentations:

Division 1 Men: Coached by Callum Lewis

Best and Fairest: Jonathon Neilsen. This player always rocked up and performed at his best, be it even with a crook back. Even though he played every game out of position, he stood out and had a fantastic season. Congratulations on your commitment Jono!

Best and Fairest Runner up: Kane McAdam: I think I recieved a message from this bloke after every game, comparing himself to previous years..."I used to be able to do this." Litte did he realize that he was stringing together some great games. Congratulations on an awesome season Kane!

Most Valuable Player: Kane McAdam: To me, the MVP is a special award of someone who meets certain criteria; Commitment by the player to the team (including training and functions), Shows leadership by example on and off the field, Gains the respect of team members through constructive actions and comments, Shows support and encouragement for all team members, Work ethic on the field during training and matches, Commitment to developing and encouraging younger players at training and during matches on and off the field. This year's recipient has hoit every one of those categories and has shown why he is a leader of our club. Congratulations Kane.

Rising Star: Miles Reilley: I had heard a lot of hype about this player preseason and leading into round one. It only took two games (one against us) to show us that he was more than ready to strut his stuff in the Div 1 side. When he played, he gave it his all. He always performed and took on board any advice. Congratulations Miles on a great season.

Division 2 Men: Coached by Sam Climpson

Best and Fairest: Brayden Caldow: Brayden had a breakout 2021 season. He really cemented himself as one of our most important players. Being in the goals, it can be hard to dominate games, but when you watch Brayden play you can't help but be impressed. He grew so much confidence this season and really took charge of the backline. Another young star that hopefully has a lot of involvement with Saints Hockey Club for a long time to come.

Best and Fairest Runner up: Oliver Mounsey: An incredible first seasin in senior hockey with Saints. Ollie was full of confidence and willingness to learn and take the game on, he has this uncanny ability to work his way through defenders and comes up with important plays when it matters.

Most Valuable Player: Joshua Climpson: Josh came into this team and immediately provided a sense of calm in our backline. His communication from the back and structuring set us up or success in a lot of games. I think that anyone who played in the reds would agree the dynamic and mindset changes when he gets on the field.

Rising Star: Oliver Mounsey: This one was tough; we had a few new faces in our team this year and were all full of talent. Ollie just provided a desire to play wherever and had the flexibilty and capability to adapt to any position, midway through the seaon, he even stepped into goalie just to help the team. I am very excited to see Ollie's progress over the next few seasons as I feel we have just scratched the surface.

Division 2 Women - Saints Red: Coached by Kelli Caldow

Best and Fairest: Tayissa Popowicz: Tay has had an up and down season off the field as she was busy planning a wedding which hasn't worked out yet. The flip side of this meant that we had her for more games which was reat for us. Her never stop running and always smiling, positive attutude is great to have around and why she was named as one of the captains for this year. Congratulation Tay from all our teammates

Best and Fairest Runner up: Marita Tranter: Marita has always given 100% on the field. She is always happy to run and run and doesnt stop, often getting back into defence to help out when other haven't made it there yet. This is great for me and her teammates and makes sorting positions easier. She always came to training- unless she was busy playing hockey. Congratulation Marita.

Most Valuable Player: Cassie O'Reilly: Cass is a Saints girl through and through. She is such a committed person to have in your team and our club. She is enthusiastic and always encouraging of her fellow teammates and this is why she was names as one of our captains this year. She has also been a great support to me behind the scenes as she always does. You know when there is training or a game on Cassie will be there. Thanks Cass and congratulations.

Coaches Award: Emily Caldow: Em really stepped up this year which was very much appreciated. I was coaching two teams which meant trying to manage 30 girls and Em decided she could help (or something like that). What an amazing effort she put in- keeping track of absolutely everything from availabilities, games played, doing team sheets, my personal IT support and keeping us all in line. She has been a great support to the whole team and my own personal secretary. Thanks Em and Congratualtions.

Division 2 Women - Saints Black: Coached by Kelli Caldow

Best and Fairest: Kelli Caldow: Across the women's group, we had a few girls who could play goalie. Nobody really wanted to play that position all year, so the plan was to share it. Kelli decided to be one of those players to rotate into goalie. She ended up playing that position perhaps more than she had really anticipated. Turns out she was amazing. Everytime she played, she gave it absolutely everything. The teams we played against, both div 1 and 2, didn't know who was in goals some of the time. They just assumed it was someone who played there regularly and had done so for years. Kelli was able to stop nearly everything that came at her. I know she played some games on the field, but not as many as originally planned. She is definitley a deserved winner. Well done Kelli.

Best and Fairest Runner up: Chloe Cherry: Chloe plays wherever she is needed and is happy to keep on running around. On the field, she just keeps doing her thing, which is much appreciated by your teammates. It is great to have Chloe and her own cheer squad when they were allowed. Chloe is always happy to play extra games if needed too which is great. Congratulations Chloe.

Most Valuable Player: Courtney Sloane: Courtney was another new addition to Saints women's this year. She came to all of the trainings that she could and was always keen to run and get us moving. Every game she gave it her all which was inspiring to the team. This was part of why she was names one of the captains. Courtney's experience of playing Goalie and on the field was a great asset for us and she often played goals in one team and on the field in the other which was much appreciated. Hopefully, in future years we can do some more off the field for her to join in. Welcome and Congratulations Courtney

Coaches Award: Emma Edwards: Emma was new to the club this year who came back to play hokcey after a long break, even using her wooden stick to begin with. She was very keen and wanted to learn and remember how to play again. She asked alot of questions and took on board what was said which was great. Emma was put in almost all of the positions on the field and was happy to give it a go and be guided by us around her. It was great to have her join us and hopefully, she will stay with the club for a while. Welcome and congratulations Emma.

This brings us to our final award and one of the most important awards for our club; The Alan and Peter Climpson Best Club Person Award. This year the award was won by 2 people. These two individuals have been recognised for all the work this year for our club and were nominated by their peers. They have both done an outstanding amount of work on and off the field. I am proud to announce this years winners are Kelli Caldow and Stacey Climpson.

Congratulations to all of this years award winners. Thank you to everyone who is apart of this great club. I can't wait to see you all again for season 2022.

Thanks

Wendy Climpson
