Friends of Mitta Achievements

To recap Friends of the Mitta achievements here’s a partial list of all the cool stuff FOTM has accomplished since we started at the end of 2015:

  •         Moved map and signboard at Bundara launch area on Mitta to increase parking
  •         Improved put-in/take-out ramp at Bundara launch area on the Mitta, installed 2 more picnic tables, ongoing maintenance including potholing road
  •         Designed and paid for printing updated Mitta river map after it was defaced, replaced at Big River, Bundara & Hinnomunjie Bridge take out
  •         Paid for second toilet at Hinno take out ($14k)
  •         Collaborated with DEECA to install changing rooms at Hinno
  •         Collaborated with local Landcare to plant 100 native trees at Hinno, plus weeding, mulching, watering and tree-guarding over 6 years
  •         Collaborated with DEECA crew to rebuild and widen take out ramp at Hinno
  •         Designed and paid for interpretive signs and picnic tables at Hinno
  •         Created new “Upper Faithfull’s” river journey camp on the Mitta (on public lands), and annually clear broom and blackberries from it and “Sandy Beach” (Wally’s Camp) just downstream
  •         Collaborated with Parks Victoria (PV) on many projects including:
  •         Annual local campground potholing (paying for many loads of gravel & machinery), fire pit repair and replacement, picnic table repair and replacement and more
  •         Annual local trail maintenance
  •         Removal of abandoned vehicles along pristine Heritage Listed Mitta river 
  •         Blackberry removal along all four of our local rivers (Mitta Mitta, Bundara, Cobungra and Middle Creek)
  •         Total willow removal of all four of our local rivers in collaboration with NECMA (NorthEast Catchment Authority (we’ve spent about a half million bucks on this and counting)
  •         Huge annual get-together events with live music, Annual silent auction offering an opportunity to get river gear and more
  •         Annual “Give-Back” volunteer day with Parks Victoria on the Mitta with hundreds of volunteers • Bought and installed extra TP holders in all local campground toilets
  •         Created & maintains the most comprehensive resource for local environmental, historical and paddler information there is: http://www.friendsofthemitta.org
  •         Worked with PV over many years to create a proper take-out at Bally-Hooley on the Snowy
  •         Monitor and organized (the previous sentence looks like a link, change the formatting) tree/obstacles removal from the river corridors  And counting...
