Rhyll Opening

Published Thu 27 Oct 2016

At the Rhyll Yacht Club opening weekend we had good close racing for the 2 races on Saturday but unfortunately 46 Knot winds prevented racing on the Sunday. In the first race Freight Train won the start ahead of Green Peas and Ham followed by Prospecting Too. Freight Train tacked to the right to take advantage of the tide but when she came back Green Peas and Ham crossed in front. The left side paid again and Freight Train rounded the top mark first with Green Peas and Ham close behind followed by Prospecting Too. This is how things stayed until Prospecting Too passed Green Peas and Ham at the end of the third work. Prospecting Too attacked Freight Train on the work to the Finish but. Freight Train just crossed the line first as she found the bottom.

We then had afternoon tea and the official opening.

The Second race was a Le Mans start stern chaser. The FDs started 20, 21, and 22 minutes behind the first boat and as the wind had strengthened they never got near the front boats but had a great race with each other. Freight Train’s local knowledge had her using a swing rudder that enabled her to catch the others across the mud flats before entering the deeper water of the race area. In the end Freight Train triumphed over Prospecting Too with Green Peas and Ham Third.

The day was completed with a dinner at the club and a talk from Andrew McCowan about his company’s involvement in predicting the tides at the Rio Olympics.
