Unfortunatley due to the Covid-19 Situation, Fencing New Zealand has had to cancel this year's National Secondary School Championships

 

Fencing Mid South, and Fencing New Zealand invite you to attend the National Secondary School Championships 2021 to be held at Pioneer Recreation & Sports Stadium in Christchurch on 28 to 30 August 2021

Eligibility: To fence in the secondary schools competition fencers must be of secondary school age ie: Year 9 to Year 13 and be enrolled in 2021 at either a secondary school or correspondence school or home-schooled. 

 If you are not sure whether the competition is appropriate for you/ your child please check with your coach.

Participants must be affiliated members of Fencing New Zealand who have paid their membership fee for the 2021 fencing year or if you are an international fencer of your country.

Fencing New Zealand/ Regional 2021 Membership

Affiliations of all competitors (both national and international) will be checked at time of  entry
 

Competition Format: 

Individual Events: One round of poules (bouts to five hits) followed by direct elimination (bouts to 15 hits).

All weapons will be fenced as separate gender. 

Teams: The team competition will  have maximum of 16 teams and will be fenced as a direct elimination event with places fenced off from the round of four.  

Teams Event:

The teams event will be fenced by regional secondary school teams. (ie: North, Central, Mid South, South). The teams will be selected in advance by the respective Regional Bodies.   A regional team  can be made up of fencers from a single school if that is desired. 

The named teams may consist of up five members.  Four of these five members must be selected to be the team before the team's event starts. DT will announce the time that the team composition must be confirmed by. Only the four competing members are eligible for a medal. 

No changes to the named five are permitted after submission. 
Regions are entitled to submit an A, B, C and D team.
Should any region be unable to fulfil its allocation, then additional teams may be offered to other regions at the discretion of the DT and Head Referee. 

Medals: Gold, Silver and two Bronze medals will be awarded in each indivdual event.

Teams Medals: Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams only.

Trophies: New Zealand National Secondary School Champs trophies will also be awarded. The youngest finalist trophy will also be awarded for the first time in ten years.   

Entry Fees:  

Individual Event: $60 per weapon

Registration will close on Monday 16th August at 8pm.

Late entries close on Wednesday 25th August and will attract an additional fee of $50. Entries received after this date, 25th August, are at discretion of the Head DT and Head Referee.

Team Event:  $60 per team per weapon 

Mid South prefers entries fees to be paid at time of registration or by 26th August.  No payments will be taken at the venue.  The preferred method of payment is by internet banking to the Fencing Mid South tournament account. Credit card/ paypal payments will attract a service fee.

Multiple Discipline Entry: If you are entered in multiple disciplines and the next discipline is scheduled to begin while you are still competing, you will be scratched from the then starting discipline and expected to continue competing in the ongoing discipline. No refunds will be provided. 

Equipment Standards: 

Clothing: All clothing must be in a good state of repair and be washed. 

Minimum of 1150N protection for Torso. This can be made up either by 350N Jacket with an 800N plastron or 800N Jacket with a 350N plastron.  

350N Breeches

Masks: 350N Mask. All masks must fit well and be in good condition. The elastic strap shall be in good working order with elasticity and be able return to its original position after stretching, without deformation. The hook and loop securing the elastic shall be capable of retaining the elastic and resisting removal. Leon Paul X-Change Masks must have a secondary Strap/Bar. Visor Masks are strictly prohibited for all 3 weapons

Gloves: Must be in good condition and have no hole for body wires. 800N gloves are required for Sabre.

Chest Protectors for Women are compulsory.

Weapon Specific: 

Foil: Lame Bibs (Curly mask wires are not permitted) and FIE blades required, Bayonet and 2 pin body wires accepted. FIE no. 3  size blades are acceptable. 

Epee: FIE blades required. Leon Paul SR-71 blades that are stamped 2013 to 2015 will not be accepted. Leon Paul V blade without a unique serial number will not be accepted.

Sabre: FIE blades S2000 or later blades required. Curly mask wires are not permitted.

Weapons Check: 

Friday 27th August

Venue: Pioneer Stadium, 75 Lyettleton St, Spreydon.

Time: 6pm to 8:30pm All weapons

Weapons Check will be open one hour before the registration time of each event.  Priority will be given to out-of-town fencers at this time. Mid South fencers are encouraged to have had your weapons checked on Friday night.

Please be sure to read the file attached about weapons control and where. Check the map to see where the bag area is at the Pioneer Sports & Recreation Centre.

Control marks: It is the fencer’s responsibility to ensure that all equipment that goes through weapons control has control marks. It is the fencer’s responsibility to ensure control marks are still present every time they go to the piste.

Covid-19 Protcols

While there is a risk of Covid-19 in the community and New Zealand is at Alert Level one or higher the following additional rules and protocols will be followed:

  • Fencers, coaches, officials and spectators who are sick or have any Covid symptoms should withdraw from the competition and stay away from the venue.
  • The DT has the right to refuse entry to a competitor, coach, official or spectator who is showing signs of being unwell. This will be determined by a medically trained officer who will administer a temperature check. If the result comes back over 38C+ they shall be removed from the competition.
  • Fencers equipment & whites must be clean and recently washed.
  • Fencers will be provided with a box for their equipment to be left at weapons control to be checked. 
  • There is to be no sharing of fencing equipment or water bottles.
  • Please sign in with the government Covid Tracer App when you enter the venue
  • The change to rule t.122 will apply. Fencers will not shake hands of their opponent or the referee on the piste but will salute instead. 
  • There is to be no hugging or kissing at the conclusion of both individual or team bouts.
  • Spare weapons/ body wires need to be kept either in a piste bag or neatly at the end of the piste. They need to be removed by the fencer at the end of each bout.
  • Hand sanitiser will be at each piste for use before fencers start poules & DE rounds
  • QR codes will be posted around the venue that will link fencers to the live competition results. Results won’t be posted in one location within the venue, as we wish to minimise large congregation of fencers/ coaches and spectators.
  • Alert level change - if there is an alert level change in Christchurch, guidelines will be issued to all registered fencers with any updates regarding venue, spectators or any additional protocol that will be put into place.

Video Refereeing: Video Refereeing will be used for the final bout of all events. In all cases it will be used at the discretion of Head DT & Head Referee. 

Rule Change:  FIE rule t.124, Non-Combativity will be implemented at this competition. 

FIE rule t.122, is suspended and will be required as follows. Fencers will instead be required to salute each other,  in way of acknowledging their opponent.

Drug Free:  By participating in this event, you agree that you have been warned of the potential of being selected for anti-doping testing and you will comply with anti-doping testing if required. Results: The link to the live results will be available on the National Secondary School Championships 2021 event page and on the Fencing Time Live website. There will be QR codes displayed at the venue to take you to the results.

Podium Protocol: All fencers must wear either regional, club or FeNZ tracksuit jacket, breeches or tracksuit pants, fencing socks and shoes while on podium. 

Food:  Pioneer Stadium  has an onsite cafe which is in the foyer beside the swimming pool. It also has a range of vending machines. 

Competition Merchandise: Competition Tee-Shirt: Take home a memento of this tournament by purchasing a specially designed tee shirt, designed by one of Mid South’s fencers, Mikhail Lopez

Cost: $40 Orders close Friday 6th August for pick up in Christchurch at the competition. Tee shirts ordered after this date will attract a postage fee. Tee shirts will be available for pick up at the registration desk.

The competition tee shirt is made from 100% BIZ COOL™ Cotton-feel Micro Polyester. The features of this shirt are that the fabric is No-fuss anti-shrink, anti-fade fabric and has a cotton-like feel to keep you cool and dry.  The fabric is also a Heathered marle effect fabric for a modern athletic look.
