Fencing Mid South and Fencing New Zealand invite you to attend the National Secondary School Championships 2018 to be held at Pioneer Stadium in Christchurch on 7 - 9 September 2018

 

This competition is open to all fencers who are of secondary school age ie: Year 9 to Year 13 and are enrolled at either a secondary school or correspondence school or home-schooled.

Eligibility: Participants must be members of Fencing New Zealand  (ie: have paid their membership fee for the 2018 year). If you are not yet a member you can click on the link below to become one.

A membership check will be done for all entries on Wednesday 29th August.

Registrations: Individual event registration will close on Wednesday 29th August at 8pm. 

Competition Format

Individual Competition: 1 round of poules (Bouts to 5 hits) followed by direct elimination (Bouts to 15 hits).

All weapons will be fenced as separate genders unless a minimum of six participants is not achieved, in which case a mixed event will be fenced.

Medals: Gold, Silver & 2 Bronze medals will be awarded in each event

Trophies: The New Zealand Secondary School trophies will also be awarded. 

Teams’ Competition: 

Following the decision of the FeNZ Board at its meeting on Wednesday 8 August, a change to the published format for the teams’ competition is required.

The teams’ event will now be fenced under a school-team format, with composite teams permitted as follows :

  • Fencers must fence for their school, where 3 or more fencers of the same gender and experienced in the weapon are registered and available to participate
  • Where there are insufficient fencers to make up a team, individual fencers may be selected and registered by their Regions to form composite teams with other individual (including home-schooled) fencers
  • Both School and Composite teams will compete for and be eligible for medals in each event. 

The teams competition will run with a maximum of eight teams in the following events.

  • Women’s Foil
  • Men’s Epee
  • Women’s Epee
  • Men’s Sabre
  • Women’s Sabre

Each region will be entitled to enter up to two teams per event. Should any region be unable to fulfil its allocation, then additional teams may be offered to other regions at the discretion of the tournament organiser and DT. 

For Men’s Foil the competition will be run with a maximum of 16 teams. 

The team competition will be fenced as a direct elimination event with places fenced off from the round of four. Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams only. 

The regional secretary will enter all teams from their region in the team competition. 

Team entries close on Thursday 16th August at 8pm. If additional entries are available, secretaries will be notified directly the following day to allow final team entries by 8pm Friday 17th August.  The fencers participating in each entered team must be notified to the DT by 8pm Wednesday 29th August. 

Entry Fees:  

Individual Event  $50 per weapon

Individual event registration will close on Wednesday 29th August at 8pm.

Team Event $60 per team, per weapon

Team event entries close 15th August at 6pm.

Late entries will be accepted at the discretion of the organiser. Late entries will attract a late fee of $15.

Fencers who fail to present without informing the DT at least one hour before the competition starts, will relinquish their full entry fee.

Entry fees are to be paid at time of entry. The preferred method of payment is by internet banking to the Fencing Mid South tournament account.

Equipment Standards: 

Clothing:

  • Minimum of 1150N protection for Torso. This can be made up either by 350N Jacket with an 800N plastron or 800N Jacket with a 350N plastron.  
  • 350N Breeches
  • 350N Mask. All masks must be fitted well and in good state of repair with elastic in good condition. Leon Paul X-Change Masks must have a secondary Strap/Bar. Visor Masks are strictly prohibited for all 3 weapons
  • Gloves- Must have no hole for body wires
  • Chest Protectors for Women are compulsory.

Weapon Specific: 

Foil: Lame Bibs (Curly mask wires are not permitted) and FIE blades required, Bayonet and 2 pin body wires accepted. FIE no. 3 blades are acceptable. 

Epee: FIE blades required. Leon Paul SR-71 blades that are stamped 2013 to 2015 will not be accepted. Leon Paul V blade without a unique serial number will not be accepted

Sabre: FIE blades S2000 or later blades required. Curly mask wires are not permitted.

 

Weapons Check:

Thursday Night­ 6th September: 

7pm to 9pm    Venue:  The Fencing Institute, 91 Jack Hinton Dr, Addington THIS HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO MITRE TEN RUGBY ROAD CLOSURE. 

Friday 7th September: 

2:30pm to 3:30pm Sabre only    Venue: Pioneer Stadium, 75 Lyttelton St, Somerfield 

5pm to 8pm All weapons

Weapons Check will be open one hour before each event. Priority will be given to out-of-town fencers at this time. Mid South fencers are encouraged to have had your weapons checked on either Thursday or Friday night.

4pm Men's & Women's Sabre Poules start

6:30pm Sabre Teams start (Sabre teams will start 30 minutes after individual sabre concludes ie: it will start as soon as the medals have been presented)

8:30am Men's Individual  Foil & Men's Foil Teams registration closes

9am Men's Foil Poules start

10:15am Women's Individual Epee & Women's Epee Teams registration opens

11am Women's Epee poules start

Men's Foil Teams and Women's Epee Teams will commence after the medals have been presented for the individual competitions.

Podium Protocol: All fencers must wear either regional or school tracksuit jacket, breeches or tracksuit pants, fencing socks and shoes while on podium.

Fencing Mid South Food Trailer:  Mid South will be running a food trailer outside the venue for the duration of the competition. Our food trailer will be selling burgers plus some sweet treats. Please let us know if you require gluten free options. 

Pioneer Stadium also has an on-site cafe and numerous vending machines.

Competition Dinner: The competition dinner will be held on Saturday 8th September at 7.30pm. All fencers, parents and supporters, coaches and competition officials are encouraged to attend. 

It will be held at Madame Kwong, 155 Blenheim Rd

Cost: $35 per person. This includes 3 course meal and a soft drink.

Cost: $45 Orders close Friday 24th August. Tee shirts will be available for pick up at the registration desk.
