Umpiring

- Umpiring in 2024 -

  • This season we have a Senior Umpire Coordinator (Tash McCarthy) and Junior Umpire Coordinator (Niccole Cooper) who will be working alongside a panel of experienced umpires to develop and improve the standard of umpiring in our Association.
  • Please see the list on the following page of suitably confident umpires that other teams can call upon.
  • Our umpiring panel, alongside team Captains and other willing umpires will continue to utilise the Umpires-Esperance Hockey WhatsApp Group (ensuring each team has at least one member in this group) where teams unable to fill umpiring duties throughout the season put up a notice to ask for help. Naturally everyone has the right to say no.
  • Umpires doing a duty for another team to be paid $50/game (capped).
  • If a team is unable to cover an umpiring duty, they should let their grade’s umpiring coordinator know by 6pm the Thursday before a game. This is to abide with our association’s by-law rule of forfeiting a match time frame.
  • Some experienced umpires have indicated they would be happy to mentor learner umpires as well – if your team has members willing to learn or wanting a mentor, please reach out to Umpire or Grade Coordinators.

Please try and download the FIH ‘RULES OF HOCKEY’ app. It has a great breakdown of the rules, and quizzes so you can self-test!

If you are thinking of becoming an umpire speak to either of our Umpire Coordinators or one of the committee members. You can also see the great resources FREE to download on the Hockey WA website here: https://www.hockeywa.org.au/participate/rulesandresourcesumpiring/
