Women's Intermediate & Advanced Sailing Development
Overview
The She Sails Coaching Program is designed for women with basic sailing experience who are looking to build confidence, refine their skills, and become more capable, independent sailors.
Delivered over 6 weeks, the program is based on the Australian Sailing Green Fleet, Intermediate and Advanced coaching framework, adapted for adult sailors. Each session combines practical on-water coaching, skill development, race coaching, and a post-session debrief in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Program Objectives
By the end of the program, participants will:
- Build confidence sailing independently.
- Improve boat handling and boat speed.
- Develop racing skills, tactics, and strategy.
- Strengthen decision-making and safety awareness.
- Gain confidence participating in club racing.
- Connect with other women through sailing.
Who Is the Program For?
This program is suitable for women who:
- Have completed a Learn to Sail course or have equivalent sailing experience.
- Can rig and sail a dinghy independently.
- Want to further develop their sailing and racing skills.
- Are looking to sail confidently without an instructor onboard.
Program Structure
Duration: 6 Weeks - 6 Saturdays starting on the 8th of August.
Session Length: 3 Hours
Each session includes:
- Brief theory session
- On-water coaching
- Skills-based exercises
- Practice race or sailing scenario
- Debrief and goal setting
Weekly Program
Week 1 – Boat Handling & Confidence
Focus: Build confidence with boat handling and independent sailing.
Topics:
- Boat setup and rig tuning
- Efficient launching and recovery
- Boat balance and trim
- Tacking and gybing
- Goal setting
Week 2 – Boat Speed
Focus: Improve boat speed through better sail trim, steering, and balance.
Topics:
- Sail trim
- Balance and weight placement
- Steering techniques
- Efficient upwind and downwind sailing
- Introduction to performance tuning
Week 3 – Wind Awareness
Focus: Build confidence sailing in a variety of conditions.
Topics:
- Reading wind shifts
- Gust response
- Sailing in stronger breeze
- Boat positioning
- Building confidence in changing conditions
Week 4 – Racing Skills
Focus: Develop confidence around the racecourse.
Topics:
- Racing Rules overview
- Starting techniques
- Mark roundings
- Boat positioning
- Practice coaching races
Week 5 – Tactics & Strategy
Focus: Improve race awareness and decision-making.
Topics:
- Course strategy
- Wind shifts
- Fleet positioning
- Decision making
- Communication onboard (where applicable)
Week 6 – Advanced Boat Handling & Race Coaching
Focus: Consolidate skills through advanced coaching and race scenarios, preparing participants to sail and race confidently without a coach onboard.

- Accelerating out of manoeuvres
- Heavy weather techniques
- Recovery drills
- Problem solving on the water
- Coach-led practice racing
- Individual feedback
- Tactical coaching
- Skills assessment
- Fun regatta or challenge races
- Program review and presentation of certificates

Program Focus:
The Intermediate Fleet Program includes scheduled and regular coaching. Allowing you to practice and race in club and class association programs at clubs.
At Intermediate Fleet level you may remain active- for-life, and enjoy lifelong activity which can cross multiple disciplines, and class of boat or board.
During the Intermediate Fleet Program, there is continued freesail opportunity to support further enjoyment in the sport and environment.
