YSF WINTER DEVELOPMENT SQUAD



The CYCSA Winter Development Squad offers sailors a valuable introduction to the Youth Sailing Foundation and the opportunity to build essential skills and knowledge aboard our fantastic Elliott 7 keelboats.
This program is designed for active club sailors as well as those looking to join the Development Youth Squad or advance their existing skills within the squad. It provides a supportive environment to further develop keelboat sailing techniques, along with a deeper understanding of racing strategies and tactics.
Held over three days, the program delivers a fantastic opportunity for sailors to enhance their abilities, work towards performance squad selection, and continue progressing in their sailing journey—while enjoying the experience and making new friends along the way.
Development Squad Objectives
- Provide coaching, theory, and training for sailors to develop their sailing skills for keelboats.
- Improve fleet racing skills using Elliott 7’s.
- Build a better level of boat handling skills using both asymmetric and symmetric spinnakers.
- Develop sound knowledge and understanding of Racing Rules of Sailing.
- Improve tactics to enhance fleet racing skills.
- Introduce basic match racing concepts.
- Gain valuable teamwork experience.
Day 1 Training Program – Tuesday (0900 - 1500)
- Sail prep including rigging.
- Crew roles and boat mechanics
- Basic boat handling fundamentals
- Sailing ropes and knots
- Theory/Practical - rules of the road, basic rules of sailing
Day 2 Training Program - Wednesday (0900 - 1500)
- Develop crew role and boat mechanics
- Boat control
- Boat speed and handling - slow speed, build and fast modes
- Theory - for next day - Race tactics and strategy in fleet racing
Day 3 Training Program - Thursday (0900 - 1500)
- Further develop crew role and boat mechanics
- Further develop boat control
- Further boat speed and handling- slow speed, build and fast modes.
- Fleet racing starts.
- FIne tune

Eligibility
Sailors who want to join the Development Squad must be aged between 13-18 years old and have demonstrated sailing ability at club level, through a sailing course or sailed in general. Submit an application of 200 words or less outlining sailing goals and previous sailing experience and ability to commit to the program addressed to Luke Allison - ysf.coach@cycsa.com.au
Fees – $290
CYCSA YSF Squad Members – $145 (50% discount with code: YSFS50)
Members of any SA sailing club – $261 (10% discount with code: YSFS10)
Families enrolling a second child – $232 (20% discount with code: YSFS2nd20)
The program includes access to all boats and club equipment, personalized one-on-one coaching throughout, and your very own YSF Squad Team Shirt!

Program Focus:
The Intermediate Fleet Program includes scheduled and regular coaching. Allowing you to practice and race in club and class association programs at clubs.
At Intermediate Fleet level you may remain active- for-life, and enjoy lifelong activity which can cross multiple disciplines, and class of boat or board.
During the Intermediate Fleet Program, there is continued freesail opportunity to support further enjoyment in the sport and environment.
