Junior Sail Training Program 2026-27
Junior Sail Training is ourseason-long program for young sailors who are ready to make sailing their regular sport. Sailors train regularly, develop their skills and confidence, and have fun sailing with friends.
The program runs from November through to mid-February, with most sessions held on Sundays plus additional sailing days during January. Regular participation gives sailors the opportunity to build their skills and confidence throughout the season.
Who is this program for?
This program is for junior sailors who want to develop their sailing skills beyond a short holiday course and become regular sailors.
Sailors don't all start at the same point. They may be new to regular sailing, have completed Tackers or another introductory sailing program, or already have some sailing experience. We'll consider their current skills, confidence and experience when determining the most appropriate group.
Boats
- Most sailors will need to have their own boat to participate in Junior Sail Training. Most BYS junior sailors sail Minnows, although we also support Optis and O'pen Skiffs.
- For first-year junior sailors, BYS provides OziOptis, so there is no need to purchase a boat straight away.
Developing and progressing
Sailors work towards the skills and competencies appropriate to their group and progress when they are ready. Some sailors develop quickly, while others benefit from more time and practice. Completing a previous Tackers course does not necessarily indicate a sailor's current skill level.
As sailors develop, they may progress from learning the fundamentals, through Developing Sailors and Novice Fleet, into Club racing and further development.
Novice Fleet is a new part of our Junior Sail Training program. Sailors in this group will spend part of their session training with their coach and part of the session putting their skills into practice through Novice Fleet racing. Developing sailors will work towards joining Novice Fleet as they become ready during the season.
Getting the most from the program
Sailing skills develop through practice and time on the water. Regular participation gives sailors the best opportunity to build their skills, develop confidence and progress with their group.
We understand that sometimes sailors can't attend every session. If they miss sessions, their progress may simply take a little longer.
Parents are part of the program
Junior sailing is a team effort, and parents are asked to help with some aspects of the program. This may include assisting with launching and recovery, helping set up and pack down equipment, tower duty, race management and supporting groups.
We'll provide guidance for the roles you need to undertake, and many don't require sailing experience.
Parent volunteer requirements
Parents of participants are requested to obtain a Working With Children Check (WWCC) and list Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron as their volunteer organisation.
If you need help understanding the requirements or have questions about volunteering, our Sailing Office team is happy to help.
What to bring
Sailors should come prepared for an active day on the water and bring suitable sailing clothing, including their own well-fitting lifejacket, a wetsuit or other warm clothing, secure footwear that can be worn in the water, a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks.
