Laser Class

The Laser, (ILCA), is a single-handed dinghy designed in 1970 and has quickly become one of the world's most popular sailing classes due to its affordability, simplicity, and performance.  Australia has an impressive record in Laser sailing, particularly in international competitions like the Olympics and World Championships. Australian sailors have consistently demonstrated excellence in the Laser class, contributing to the country's strong reputation in the sport of sailing.

In Queensland, and particularly in Brisbane, the Laser class gained popularity for both club racing and training. The Brisbane Sailing Squadron, with its focus on both competitive and social sailing, has seen growth in the Laser because it is an ideal boat to engage a wide range of sailors, from beginners to seasoned racers.

Being a part of the Brisbane Sailing Squadron means joining a community of sailing enthusiasts. It's a place where sailors can share experiences, learn from each other, and enjoy social events. Laser sailors, in particular, often form a close-knit group within the club, sharing tips and experiences specific to the class.

Laser Club Boats Available

The club has three Lasers for hire to give potential members an opportunity to try the class before committing to join the club and buy their own boat.

We hire the Lasers on Saturdays between September and Easter for an afternoon session with our racing fleet. For safety reasons the hirers must stay within the vicinity of the race course and not go off for a sail on their own. You will also need to convince the Committee's Laser Representative that you have experience skippering a dinghy or at least have completed a Start Sailing 1 and 2 training course before you can hire a Laser.

Cost is $40 for the hire which includes the nomination fee for the race.

Please email if you would like to book a boat

Laser Storage

We now have a limited number of spaces available to store Lasers under the club. Please talk to a committee member if you would like to make use of one of these places.  If you are looking to buy a Laser, the classifieds page at the Qld Laser Association is a good place to start.
