Richmond River Regatta wrap

Mark and Wayne made their annual trip to Ballina last weekend to particpate in the Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club's Annual Regatta, and were joined by regular BRSC visitors Peter Fell and Debbie Jones from Tweed Valley. Like at home, the light breeze proved a challenge for the long Ivan Bathgate memorial race, the return trip up river to near Pimlico Island taking around 2 hours. The monohull division of various Lasers and Mark in his Finn was closely contested with a number of lead changes and catch ups possible in the fickle conditions. The run out tide was always going to favour the lead boats and Mark established a sizeable gap when he turned at the top mark and headed for home. Not done for yet, however, Peter closed the gap considerably when Mark fell into a hole but ulitmately fell short when the pressure returned and Mark powered on to record a comfortable win, Peter second, Wayne third.
Sunday was again light but enough for an early start and 3 short races. Wayne was able to redeem himself with a couple of decent races to finish second overall in the monohull division, just managing to pip Peter by a single point. Debbie had one great race to post a second place, but everyone had to concede to Mark who finished with an unbeaten 4 wins from as many races.
The colourful collection of skiffs, trailables, cats and monos makes the Richmond River Regatta quite unique, as is the opportunity to sail in clear water off a sandy beach. Thank you to Phil, Garry and others for a great regatta and the hospitality shown to visiting boats.
