Eight of the eleven Commonwealth Games selected athletes are currently engaging in a training camp at the GB headquarters in Sheffield, UK. The team headed over to Sheffield soon after the trials to begin their preparations early for this year’s major benchmark events. The camp serves as a preliminary get-together for most of the group and will allow them to form a strong bond by the time all three preparation camps are complete and they head into the athlete’s village in Birmingham.

The five male athletes have spent the last two weeks training and sparring together with the Great Britain athletes and our three female athletes here at the camp have been fortunate to have the France national women’s team here also as they prepare for the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey in May.

This has been an exciting two weeks so far for all the athletes in attendance and with just over a week to go before the boys return to Australia there is still time to take full advantage of the World Class facilities and training partners at the GB gym before continuing their preparations back at home with their home coaches. The girls will be travelling on to Istanbul with Head Coach Kevin Smith to join the remainder of the female world championship team coming direct from Australia, most of which have just commenced a domestic training camp at the AIS, integrated with the National Futures program.

Name: Phillip Goodes

Nickname: Phil

State: South Australia

What language would you like to learn?

German or Italian

Sleep in or win the morning?

Either, depending on the circumstances.

What lead you to boxing?

As a 12-year boy I was bullied and attacked a lot being the new kid in town, and was a little overweight. Boxing was recommended to me, which I started and totally enjoyed.

I started sparring within the first few weeks, and found the challenges stimulating; learnt self-control, discipline, mental strength & mindset, confidence, fitness / weight loss, and respect just to list a few. After several years of training and competing I turned to coaching at the age of 25 and established the Riverland Boxing and Fitness Club in 1993.

What do you love about boxing?

The people, seeing athletes achieve in life - whether it’s in boxing or in personal achievements; such as professionalism, work achievements, family etc.

Why should people get into boxing?

As the same reason I did, to develop self-control, discipline, mental strength & mindset, confidence, fitness / weight loss, and respect. It’s also a great way to meet people and if you are good at it whether as an official, coach or athlete then there are great opportunities to travel and progress your knowledge and experience.

What is your vision for boxing?

For Australia to become a boxing power house; consistently winning medals or finishing in the top eight at world level competitions. To have an excellent coaching, official and athlete’s pathway structure in place and most importantly transparency / communication for our boxing community.

What is your focus for the next twelve months in boxing?

To provide my many years of experience and knowledge in coaching at all levels and managing teams at Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games.

To support the boxing community in the best way I can; share my knowledge freely to those wishing to tap into it. I have enjoyed my role as a state coaching coordinator for the last four years where I have worked hard to bring our teams and coaches together, creating a successful team environment.

What do you do outside of boxing?

I work full time as a Farm Manager for a big Horticulture Corporate and enjoy time with my family and friends.
