Battle of the Belts | Boxing Australia

The 11-strong Commonwealth Games team have arrived and settled into the Athlete Village in Birmingham in readiness for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The team comprises eight debutants at Commonwealth Games level which is big change from the team in 2018 and is exciting for the future of the sport in Australia. These Commonwealth Games also mark the final competition with Kevin Smith as Head Coach after eight successful years at the helm.

In preparation for the Games, the team engaged in a High Performance camp in Queensland in June followed by a two-week multi-nations camp in Belfast. The team was well supported at both camps by Commonwealth Games team coaches Kevin Smith, Shara Romer and Sam Brizzi as well as new Technical Lead Santiago Nieva and Queensland Academy of Sport physiotherapist Josh McCabe.

The multi-nations camp in Belfast had athletes attend from Ireland, England, India, New Zealand, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Canada. It enabled the team to gain important sparring opportunities and stimulus to best prepare them for the Competition in Birmingham. We look forward to seeing the team out there on the world stage and cheering them on!

It was back on the road for our upcoming champions, with eight states contesting for gold. 137 athletes, 47 coaches, 8 team managers and 14 referees and judges headed down to the Whitehouse Club in Burwood East, Melbourne for the Australian National Championships 7-10 July 2022.

Many athletes backed up performances over the three days, making thrilling bouts. The crowd was electric! There was no shortage of excitement and inspiring moments to take from the event - bring on the 2023 Australian U19, 17, 15, 13 Australian Boxing Championships.

Fellow Youth boxers continued to make a name for themselves throughout the championships, trying to catch the eye of selection committee members, Jamie Pittman, Phillip Goodes and Geoff Peterson, for the 2022 IBA Youth World Championships in Spain during November.

A very special thank you to Boxing Victoria and to all the staff and volunteers who helped to organise and run this event. Without your efforts, support and commitment, these events would not be possible.

Congratulations to all the athletes and Member Associations who won medals and trophies.

Beginning of July saw a successful 2022 Australian U19, 17, 15, 13 Championships in Melbourne, with more than 100 athletes competing over three days. To start the competition we had Willie Pepper perform a smoking ceremony and welcome to country.

For those who couldn’t attend in person, the live stream through My Live Sport provided the action in their own living room, including live commentary on the Saturday from Women’s World Championship Bronze Medallist, Jessica Bagley and Boxing Victoria President, Kevin Manion.

Finals day was a hit among these young athletes, including live music and the use of personalised ‘walk-out song’ for each boxer.

I would like to congratulate the following award winners from the Championships:

Best U15 Female Boxer Mackenzie Allen from QLD
Best U15 Male Boxer Beau Waters from NSW
Best Junior Female Boxer Alexis Proctor from NSW
Best Junior Male Boxer Jacob Cassar from VIC
Best Female Youth Boxer Paige Robinson from QLD
Best Male Youth Boxer Aaron Grealey from QLD
Best U15 Team Queensland
Best Junior Team Queensland
Best Female Youth Team Queensland
Best Male Youth Team Queensland
Best Referee and Judge Andrew Lazich from NSW

I’m looking forward to seeing how these young athletes come up the ranks.
