Newsletter - July

June saw five State Futures camps presented in WA, SA, VIC, NSW and QLD. Each camp was themed to suit the squad athletes and it was great to once again see State Futures athletes and coaches visiting other State Futures camps across Australia.

A last-minute tournament was requested by Boxing NZ to help select and assess a Commonwealth Games team. The National Futures selection panel and Jamie Pittman discussed the weight divisions requested and selected five athletes from Boxing Australia: Tina Rahimi (57kg ), Caitlin Beckett ( 70kg ), Charlie Senior (57kg ), Shannan Davey ( 71kg ) and Kirra Ruston ( 80kg ). The Assistant coach role for this trip went to the State Futures coaches, and was accepted by NSW Nudge Mieli.

The National Emerging elites and coach Jamie Pittman were invited into the CombatAus Commonwealth Games pre-departure camp in Brisbane ( June 19-July 2 ), where they experienced QAS sports science testing, strength and conditioning support, technical boxing sessions, and matched sparring / partner work.

The National Futures Program “Battle of the Belts” had a fantastic challenge bout with Queensland’s Jye Dixon beating Victoria’s Samual Kay in a close high level bout for the 51kg Youth Men’s belt.

Over the past two weeks all categorised boxing athletes, 2022 Commonwealth Games team coaches, personal coaches of Commonwealth Games team athletes and our National program coaches have been engaged in a High Performance training camp in Brisbane.

This camp doubled as both a pre-departure camp for the 2022 Commonwealth Games team as well as a broader High Performance camp engaging with our new program partner the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS). The partnership with the QAS will see a significant increase in performance support services devoted to the high performance boxing program including embedded Strength & Conditioning and Physiotherapy support.

The camp involved conditioning sessions at the QAS each morning and afternoon as well as technical and sparring sessions each day – predominantly delivered out of The Boxing Shop. The group also travelled to Shape Up Boxing and Fitness on the middle weekend to engage with the Queensland Performance Pathways camp.

The Commonwealth Games team, along with QAS physiotherapist Josh McCabe, will be departing their home ports for Belfast on the 7th July to engage in a two-week multi-nations sparring camp. They will then move into the Athlete’s Village in Birmingham on the 24th July, with the Commonwealth Games commencing on the 28th July. We look forward to seeing them do their thing on the international stage.
