Olympic preparations ramped up at the start of July when the team flew into Tokyo from America and Australia and headed off to the Miyazaki prefecture to attend the final pre-games training camp. Joining our team in Miyazaki was a host of qualified athletes and their training partners from the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland and the USA for the final two weeks of hard training including school combat and comp sparring. The Sheraton hotel in Miyazaki provided excellent facilities for athletes from a number of sports including the British Triathlon and USA Women’s soccer teams. The teams were all housed on separate landings within a sports specific bubble including the use of designated separate dining areas and walking paths in and around the venue.

The boxing team were welcomed into the Olympic village on the 19^th of July, by the Australian Olympic committee staff, where they received their uniforms and official kit ready to take part in the games. At the time of writing the draw has just taken place and it is Harry Garside that will begin our athletes’ quest for medals in earnest on the second day of competition at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan Sumo Stadium.

With three states across Australia having lockdown periods in July, the National Futures Program had to adapt to online drills and assessments for Strength and Conditioning programs developed by AIS S&C Coordinator Ross Smith and National Performance Pathway Lead Jamie Pittman.
