Battle of the Belts | Boxing Australia

CombatAUS is excited to have appointed Santiago Nieva to the role of National Head Coach through to the end of 2024. Santiago will take over from incumbent Kevin Smith following the conclusion of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Santiago comes to the Australian boxing high performance ranks after a successful tenure as High Performance Director and Men’s Head Coach of the Indian National Team. Before this, Nieva also held Head Coach roles with both the Swedish and Argentine National Team programs.

We are finalising Santiago’s visa process to support his arrival in advance of the upcoming High Performance camp in Brisbane starting on the 19th of June. That camp will double as a broader high performance camp for all categorised athletes, and will form a critical part of the Commonwealth Games team’s preparation block in advance of the multi-nations sparring camp in Ireland immediately prior to entry to Birmingham.

IBA Elite Women’s World Boxing Championships

The National team had a great combination of experienced and inexperienced newcomers. The most important factor driving success of the team was that each member of the team made a commitment, to themselves and to the members of the team, to encourage and do their part.

Angela Harries, Alana Portelli, Madeleine Bowen, Rachel Kavangh and Jelena Prziovska-Strachan walked into the ring as part of a National Australian boxing team for the first time. They racked up a wealth of experience at the international level which they will carry with them throughout their boxing journeys.

After just 15 bouts, Jessica Bagley secured a bronze medal as part of her campaign. What an incredible achievement! Congratulations to you and your entire team for your wonderful performance.

On behalf of Boxing Australia, I would like to congratulate the IBA Elite Women’s World Boxing Championships Women’s team athletes and officials on a successful trip to Istanbul, Turkey.

I would also like to congratulate Kristy Harris on being appointed as an Independent Director to the IBA Board. I know that she will do a great job to help further the development of boxing and I look forward to watching the outcomes.

What language would you like to learn?

Sleep in or win the morning?

Body wants to sleep in but the mind insists win the morning/day.

Favourite ice cream flavour?

Chocolate or Rum n Raisin

What lead you to boxing?

I was having issues with my son’s behaviour and close friend who was a boxing coach suggested I bring him to the gym and he would train him. My son loved it and from there I was asked to join the BACT Committee as the Assistant Director.

What do you love about boxing?

I love seeing the athletes achieve their goals. I also love the change boxing can bring to the lives of the athletes and others involved. I also love how boxing creates a sense of family and belonging.

Why should people get into boxing?

Boxing can help improve a person’s life and health. It teaches self-respect, self-discipline, self-confidence, respect for others, it helps develop goals and a sense of worth.

What is your vision for boxing?

My vision is to have sufficient funding through non-government channels to be able to send our athletes (of levels) regularly overseas to get international experience. For Australian Boxing to be highly respected across the world. To develop Women’s boxing so that the number of women athletes, coaches, RJ and administrators at least equals that of men.

What is your focus for the next twelve months in boxing?

Getting as many athletes qualified for 2024 Olympics as possible, particularly women. Finding ways to fund initiatives such as an all women national tournament, an Empowerment Seminar etc. I want to further my involvement in IBA so as to lift the profile of Australian boxing.

What do you do outside of boxing?

I am semi-retired but looking for part time work to stretch my super. I spend a lot of time looking after my 10 grandchildren. I am working on improving my health.

  Rachael Kavanagh Q&A

As she returns home and reflects on her experience, we ask Rachael Kavanagh a few questions about her time at the 2022 IBA Elite Women’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

What did you gain from this experience?

I gained a wealth of knowledge with regards to nutrition, weight management and recovery. I was able to build my knowledge of the different styles of boxing at an international level and was given many opportunities to spar with different countries enabling me to determine what I wanted to work on when I returned home.

How would you rate the trip overall and why?

This was my favourite international fight trip to date. The support and guidance I received from the Australian coaches, my team mates and the Combat sports community was amazing.

What do you learn about boxing?

I learned a great deal about technique, tactics and how large boxing tournaments are run at an international level.

What are some of your medium/short term goals? (Within the next year or so)

I plan to restructure my training, working on my strengths and weaknesses in preparation for turning professional.
