Newsletter - April

State Futures camps were presented in NSW, WA, VIC, QLD, NT, ACT and SA during March 2022. Several camps coincided with state training camps for Commonwealth Games selection events. This alignment was fantastic, particularly for the Junior and Youth Futures athletes, who gained exposure to a broader range of boxing experiences.

Forthcoming National Futures Camps at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, ACT:

  • National Youth camp 14 April until 17 April 2022 for 12 invited athletes
  • National Emerging camp in late April 2022 (more details to come)

The National Futures Program “Battle of the Belts” series has two current champions:

  • 75kg Men’s Elite Mark Borg from PCYC Blacktown
  • 63.5 Men’s Elite Bradon Dunning from Top Team Fitness and Boxing

Mark and Bradon are on the lookout for challengers and the Futures Program is seeking inaugural champions for the remaining vacant belts.

Following a sparse calendar of events due to two years of border closures and lockdowns, it was great to see a successful event held in Melbourne for the 2022 Selection Tournaments for Commonwealth Games and Elite Women’s World Championships.

More than 100 athletes competed during an action-packed four days. Each competitor gave their all and demonstrated great sportsmanship.

For those who couldn’t attend in person, the live stream through My Live Sport was well received, including live commentary from Jamie Pittman and Sam Goodman.

Finals day was a huge hit, including live music and the use of a personalised ‘walk-out song’ for each boxer.

Throughout the tournaments we also had special guests in attendance. Thank you to Medal Presenters: Kirsteen Maclean, Carly Salmon, Simon Bailey, Sue Stanley, Jason Mallia, Harry Garside, Sam Goodman, Robbie Peden, Kevin Smith, Jamie Pittman and Ted Tanner.

I would like to congratulate the following award winners from the Tournaments:

Best Women’s Boxer Tina Rahimi from NSW
Best Men’s Boxer Billy Polkinghorn from WA
Best Elite Women’s Team Boxing Victoria
Best Commonwealth Games Team Boxing NSW
John Davies Trophy Steve Wade from QLD

CombatAUS and BAL will continue to liaise to finalise preparations for the upcoming Women’s World Championships from 6-21 May 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey.

In addition, CombatAUS has organised and gained support from GB Boxing for a 3-4 week preparation and training camp in Sheffield throughout April 2022 involving the athletes qualified for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

After nearly two years out of the ring, it was great to finally see our boxers back competing at the 2022 Australian Teams Selection Tournaments which took place from 17-20 March 2022 in Melbourne.

108 athletes contesting via 86 bouts for positions across teams for both the Istanbul Elite Women's World Championships and Birmingham Commonwealth Games, we were honoured to witness some of the top athletes in the country and be inspired by some of the best officials.

Boxing Australia would like to thank Boxing Victoria, the entire referee and judges crew, and all the volunteers who made the tournament run smoothly.

Also a special thank you to Technical Delegate, Wayne Rose, for helping the BAL team pull this event together so successfully.

Boxing Australia would appreciate your feedback on this event as we seek to make continuous improvements. Please share your feedback via erin.williams@boxing.org.au.

The BAL R&J Committee Chair, Wayne Rose, conducted a referee and judge workshop in Darwin on 26/27 Feb accompanied by NT R&J Coordinator, Moses Mbemap. The workshop was broken down into theory and practical gym sessions, providing the 16 attendees valuable knowledge on their pathway to becoming referees and judges.

At the recent BAL Men and Women Selection Competitions 12 of Australia's best International and National referees and judges attended our first major National competition in over 2 years to be part of the important process of providing unbiased and neutral officiating to ensure our athletes are given the best opportunity to be selected.
