Coaching Resources

Coaches can influence a participant’s enjoyment of the game more than anyone else. They teach the skills, foster passion and lead like-minded lovers of football.

Whether taking on a local team or kicking off a career, you can help shape the next generation. Australia’s coaching pathway gives you the opportunity to maximise your potential.

Included below is a vast array of training guides developed by the FA aimed to improve the quality of coaching that players receive, from the Miniroos stage right through to the Seniors Performance Phase of player development!

MINIROOS DISCOVERY PHASE (Under 6 and 7)

Within the MiniRoos program, emphasis is placed on natural development, or learning by PLAYING football. Fun football exercises rather than coaching are key to helping players build a love for the game.

The downloadable guide below also exposes coaches to the basic rules of the game whilst also providing tips and hints on building a football culture in a completely practical setting.

SKILL ACQUISITION PHASE (Under 8 - 12)

Within the Skill Acquisition Phase, the coach must focus on building a solid foundation of technical skill within players. The downloadable guide focuses on the development of football's ‘Four Functional Game Skills’. These are:

  • First Touch
  • Striking the Ball
  • Running with the Ball
  • 1v1 Situations

These four Core Skills make up 95% of the actions of any outfield player during a game of football which is why it is critical to train these actions repeatedly so that the players have the opportunity to develop their ability to perform them more effectively during a game.

GAME TRAINING PHASE (Under 13 - 16)

In the Game Training Phase, the coach’s aim will be the development of tactical awareness, perception, and decision making through a game-related approach to training.

The Downloadable Guide below provides the coach with training sessions designed to help the players apply Functional Game Skills in a team setting using the FA endorsed ‘1-4-3-3’ formation.

PERFORMANCE PHASE (AGES 17+)

In this Phase, the coach prepares the team for a competitive environment where winning becomes the main aim. Training focuses on solving football problems, based on match analysis.

FOOTBALL CONDITIONING also becomes a key component at this stage in a player's football development.
