Course information

AS Power Boat Handling

The course is tailored for all persons wanting to qualify  for a NSW recreational boat licence, at a pace to suit all whilst having fun at the same time.

Courses are conducted from Mosman Bay on the beautiful Sydney Harbour. The course is a one-day program consisting of roughly equal parts of (1) theory & seamanship and (2) hands on training on the water.  It can be split into two parts with the theory and practical being done in separate sessions.

Course Overview

This one-day course is designed to improve your boat handling skills, especially in confined areas such as marinas and in swell and waves. You will learn more about engines and types of crafts and practise navigation techniques on a passage. In some instances, you can take your completion certificate to your State Maritime Regulator and gain the State Boat License.

Course Prerequisites

Water confident. The skills and knowledge gained in Start Powerboating or equivalent power boating experience.

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to further develop their powerboat driving skills. This course is also a prerequisite for becoming a Dinghy and/or Windsurfing Instructor.

Course Outcome

You will gain your Powerboat Handling completion certificate.

To obtain your NSW Boat Licence, you take the Australian Sailing certificate you receive on this course, together with photo ID and the licence fee, to any Service NSW centre within one year.  No need to do any further testing or logbooks.

  • Discount – for Affiliated Club Members (use code) or 10% when 2 or more student booked together.  Maximum discount 10%.
  • Min Age – 12 yrs.

What to Bring

Soft soled shoes (white if possible), hat, sunscreen, shoes, wind/rain jacket, gloves (recommended) and a curious mind.

Meet at Atlas Sailing Office at Mosman Bay Marina - 4hr parking nearby.

Atlas Sailing abides by the Australian Sailing Instructor/Participant ratios; hence places are strictly limited. All programs are subject to change with limited notice, based on demand and availability and weather conditions.

Please read the Atlas Sailing refund policy before registering. Refunds will not be provided for cancellations less than 14 days prior to the event as there are limited places available. If a session is cancelled due to weather, or another force majeure circumstance, participants will be offered a place on another scheduled date or a full refund.
