Primary role

The objective of the role is to give the successful applicant(s) the opportunity of practical experience within the Analytics department at the GWS Giants. The opportunity exists within the AFL and AFL Reserve Grade programs. The duration of the role is for the 2024 season, starting November 2023 and finishing at the end of September 2024.

Specific roles of the successful applicant(s):

·       Matchday analysis:

o   Assist in the setup, filming, live coding and in game analysis of GWS Reserve Grade matches.

·       Mid-Week analysis:

o   Assist with compilation of analytical reports both pre and post game

o   Conduct performance analysis projects for AFL and AFL Reserve Grade programs that influence decision making and the education of our players

o   Coding of vision using Sportscode

o   Compilation of vision databases

o   Assistance with live training analysis and filming

Learning Objectives 

  • At the completion of the season, the applicant(s) will have developed a solid foundation in Performance Analysis. They will be competent in the following:
  • Have an understanding of performance analysis in an elite sporting environment 
  •  Matchday analysis set up and information delivery needs
  • Analysis preparation and refined delivery
  • Ability to create reports using Tableau

·       SportsCode

o   An understanding of SportsCode and how it is used in an elite AFL environment

o   AFL matchday and mid-week workflows

o   Knowledge of key features that enhance coaching staff analysis workflows – databasing, timeline usage, sorter windows

·       Filming

o   Camera / tripod set ups - requirements for both training & matchday

o   Vision capture workflows

 

Future opportunities

Opportunities may exist for quality applicant(s) to apply for a GWS Performance Analysis Internship in their 2nd year. This pathway has already seen former university graduates employed full time post internship.

 

Prerequisites

  • Must have a good knowledge of AFL either as a player and/or as a fan
  • An interest and understanding of Performance Analysis is important
  • Must be reliable and show initiative
  • Attention to detail is essential

·       This role requires 7-10 contact hours per week. You need to be available for home matches during the season which is either Saturday or Sunday for 3 hours and at least 7 hours during the week for analysis work

·       Familiarity with Apple computers, Sportscode, excel, keynote, data visualisation tools Eg: Tableau and any other analytical software is an advantage
