The GIANTS are on an exciting journey both on and off the field. With teams in the AFL, the AFL Women’s League and Super Netball competitions, the GIANTS truly are a club like no other. On field, the AFL team has quickly grown into one of the competition’s most exciting teams with several players becoming household names across the country. Likewise, the on-field achievements of our AFL Women’s and GIANTS Netball teams are seeing the club connect with more fans and followers than ever before. Off field, the club’s exciting, innovative, and fresh brand is growing as it engages with members, fans, the community and key stakeholders across Western Sydney, Canberra and Nationally.
The GIANTS’ AFL and AFL Women’s teams are based at the club’s elite training and administration facility in Sydney Olympic Park, with GIANTS Netball based adjacent at Netball Central.

Primary role
The objective of the Internship role is to give the successful applicant(s) the opportunity of practical experience within the Performance Analysis department at the GWS Giants. The opportunity exists within the AFL, AFL Reserve Grade and AFLW programs. The duration of the role is for the 2022 season, finishing at the end of September 2022.
Specific roles may include:
- Matchday analysis role:
- Assist in the setup, filming & live coding of GWS Reserve Grade and AFLW matches
- Mid-Week analysis roles:
- Performance analysis projects for AFL, AFL Reserve Grade and/or AFLW programs
- Coding of vision using Sportscode as part of the above analysis projects
- Compiling vision databases
- Assistance with live training analysis and filming
Learning Objectives
At the completion of the season, the applicant(s) will have developed a solid foundation in Performance Analysis. They will be competent in the following:
- Have an understanding of performance analysis needs both in pre-season, during competition and post-season review
- Matchday analysis set up and information delivery needs
- Analysis preparation and refined delivery
- SportsCode
- An understanding of SportsCode and how it is used in an elite AFL environment
- AFL matchday and mid-week workflows
- Knowledge of key features that enhance coaching staff analysis workflows – databasing, timeline usage, sorter windows
- Filming
- Camera / tripod set ups - requirements for both training & matchday
- Vision capture workflows
Future opportunities
Opportunities may exist for quality applicant(s) to apply for a GWS Performance Analysis Internship in their 2nd year. This pathway has already seen former university graduates employed full time post internship.
Prerequisites
- Must have a good knowledge of AFL either as a player and/or as a fan
- An interest and understanding of Performance Analysis is important
- Must be reliable and show initiative
- Attention to detail is a must
- This role requires 8-10 contact hours. You need to be available for matchday during the season which is either Saturday or Sunday for 3 hours. At least 7 hours during the week (Monday and Wednesday are preferred work days) for analysis work
- Familiarity with Apple Mac computers, Sportscode, excel, data visualisation tools Eg: Tableau and any other analytical software is an advantage
- Please note that this is a nonpaid role – however, any expenses that maybe incurred whilst fulfilling the role will be reimbursed
